I have very close friends that lived in Burkina Faso, Togo, and Benin for well over a decade before moving back to the US due to local issues. His wife posted the other day that the Dahomey were an awful group of people who would destroy villages, murder the useless people and sell the able bodied people to slave traders. and that the agojie ladies were basically lock step involved in that and were kind of the kings SS. Like brutal savage villainy. What an odd story to champion.

heard they green lit an actual gladiator sequel and if its anything like the original plot for the sequel, its going to be bat shit and really suck. basically just following maximus in the afterlife trying to find his family

Yeah I was never much of a fan of it. I own it on DVD and I’ve never watched it after seeing it in theatres.

But it feels more close to “300” to me, without the self-indulgent slow mo.

Anybody actually seeing this movie? It’s kind of an uncomfortable part of the slave trade for modern sensitivities, to the point I’m surprised it’s being explored on the big screen.

I like how you google the real story and articles come up that slavery didn't end as depicted in this movie and that it was actually the British Empire that pressured them to get out of it but also British ended slavery for bad reasons.
