Let's do this to give advice for something to watch to laugh in these shitty times.

Mine is Tropic Thunder. I just watched it again recently. So many funny scenes. I actually thought Robert Downey Jr should have won an academy award for this. Best actor. I'm serious. But they don't give awards for comedies.

Everyone knows the "Never go full retard scene".

Here's a few other scenes that cracked me up. Really funny.

Then here's a 12 minute one of a bunch of good scenes.

In tropic thunder the part that always makes me laugh is when Downey tricks him into giving him the map by talking about how jacked up he looks.

Yeah. "You look like Rambo in Rambo 2. Not 1 but 2. When he was all shredded up. I'm trying come up a little bit myself. Got any tips?" (swipes the map)

I heard an interview with Ben Stiller on Howard Stern. Stiller said this movie couldn't be made today. In this politically correct, woke and evolved environment. And he's right. It couldn't. Thank god they made it before we reached this point. It's funny as hell.

The PC police would have a field day if you tried to make that film now of days.

Step Brothers.

I have a hard time coming up with anything close to it. If they did a Step Brothers 2 it would be the Godfather of comedy.

I believe the director, a german?, intended it to be a dark comedy, not dissimilar to Bobcat's God Bless America or even Dogma. Instead of giving the script and original source film to an American or Brit director to translate the German sense of humor to American audiences the original director did a shot by shot English language remake himself; and then was probably bewildered why American audiences reacted with horror instead of mirth.

I think it's more experimental than that. It seems to me it's a test that forces the viewer to reckon with what he consumes as "entertainment". At what point does "entertainment" cross a line into the pornographic? I believe the director would have been pleased with the audience walking out during the picture.

the 1st 20 minutes of the South Park movie is side splitting hilarious on the first few viewings.

So the 4th wall breaking by the home invaders goes from winkingly conspiratorial, this-is-all-a-big-haha-joke to complicit with the audience and maybe casting a judgment, "we're only doing this for your amusement, you keep watching, we keep going?" sorta thing. The original movie came out a decade earlier, 1997. But Funny Games re-release in 2007 was well-timed at the height of the popularity of horror porn like Hostel / Saw. The latter was at least somewhat redeeming, fun figuring out the traps and overall game; Hostel was pure gore for gore's sake. Probably the internet killed that variety of cinematic smut; people into that sort of thing can get their jollies on the net.

Severance (2006) might be closer to what I was thinking / hoping Funny Games intended to be, a decent thriller-horror movie with piss-take humor.

"Hostel" was funnier than "Funny Games".

Based on first views, Airplane is still the hardest I've ever laughed at a movie. Obviously, 40 years later, it's fatally dated.
