I heard it's the best show about Chicago since 61st Street.

It cares way too much about food and restaurant kitchen procedure. It’s like crossing a Bernstein ad with Ratatouille.

Show overall was pretty solid. Far from perfect but it did a good job with Chicago drops. Having Lin Brehmer was a solid move. Jin Bernthal does an ok Chicago buy but played a much better Baltimore cop. His accent was spot in for that. I will say the Savvy story after having spent some time drinking with the man (Savard) seemed to be pretty believable.

I honestly thought this was going to be about the movie from the late 80s surrounding an orphaned bear cub adopted by a male Kodiak Bear. (Note: it was actually very good movie if you like that kind of thing).

What about Jack the Bear starring Danny Devito?

Easily one of the best shows in years. Bernthal and Odenkirk in Fishes was 100/100

Outside of jamie lee curtis whos dialing it up a bit too much, this 2nd season is about as high quality as you can get

Far too many Extreme Close Ups in the last episode...and very slow, like too slow...vastly different from the cacophonous, rapid approach of the first few episodes of the series...hope it doesn't get too self-absorbed...music has been spot on from the start, and the montage of broken and closed restaurants including the like's of Kroll's on Cermak rings very true....writing and acting are top notch, but it need's to jump start this 2nd season

Mr. Beef is very good, but I think Al's just edges it out.

Its a good show.. I like how all the characters are flawed human beings and are somehow brought together by this 1 restaurant. I also like on season 2 they are giving more background to the bit characters by sending them to cooking school or overseas to learn desert making. Including the cousin character sent to a 5 star restaurant to learn to clean spoons and how to run the front of the house at a fancy restaurant.

Rick Bayless thinks the show has turned the restaurant industry as a career 20yrs back by showing the ugly side of the business.
Quote:
“If you’re a mother of a teenage boy that’s watching that show and he goes, ‘Mom, I want to work in restaurants,’ would you let him?” Bayless said at the event. “No you wouldn’t. That’s like the worst profession in the world.”

https://chicago.eater.com/2023/6/23/237 ... inion-hulu

Getting paid minimum wage to be yelled at by someone with a Napoleon complex.. then after 1yr of working through the yelling and dysfunctional environment you may get at $0.10 raise. While the person who works at these fancy places would never be able to afford to actually eat at the same restaurant they work in.

Tipping is a cultural standard that isn't going to be abolished by Rick Bayless or Brandon Johnson.

Al's has the best giardinara of any beef place I've ever eaten. The perfect level of heat, flavor, density, etc. It adds so much to the beef (which is very good standing alone)

Agree 100% . it seems that the last few years it’s become sort of vogue to bash Al’s for some reason. It’s still a great beef sandwich that may be equalled , but I don’t think it’s ever been surpassed.

I've only found one beef sandwich in my at least 40 years of eating beefs that was clearly superior to Al's and that was another shop on Taylor named Vittori's. There is something about Al's product at its non Taylor Street shops. Maybe they don't have the right amount of sweat dripping into the gravy.

I think Johnnie's has the best sweet peppers in the buisness, a great sausage and eye tie ice that is worth the trip on its own. Their beef seems to have changed a bit for the worse as well. Still great.

We gave up on Portillos beef a few years ago and now go with just the Vienna Italian beef from the jewels.

Getting caught up in second season. Wow that Christmas thins with Jamie Lee et Al was a thing. Gave good Seth to characters as someone said. Also gave reasons for why some characters no longer around (so far).

Tried to get into Mr. Beef 20 minutes ago, line out the door. I walked the two blocks to Al's on Wells and am enjoying a better beef sandwich now. This show might ruin Mr. Beef for locals

It's certainly a unique giardinara but I'm not sure I'd call it "the best." It's pretty much just celery, oil, and red pepper flake.

Johnnie's used to have a better beef than Al's, but their quality has gone down a bit over the years. The giardiniera at Bari on Grand is still my favorite if you are the type of person to bring your own giardiniera to the beef stand. Frannie's on River Road used to have a really good beef as well. I'd probably take any of those over Mr. Beef.

Bacci Pizza on Taylor has a fresh (not jarred with oil) giardinara that's pretty great. They also serve it at Lulu's hot dog stand. I'm not sure if it's served at other Bacci locations.

I had a beef from D'Amato's, right next to Bari, with giardinara and it was very good.

Just finished season 1 and enjoyed it. Love the music and kinda making me consider getting back to some Wilco a bit at work on the headphones.

I've just barely made it through the first 2 episodes of season 3, both of which have been absolutely brutal. I'm not quite sure what the objective of this show is, but it's definitely not striving to be entertaining. Perhaps it is attempting to elevate the suicide rate among the largely white PMC audience that watches it? I guess I could get behind that.

You are right TM. Sunday evening we binged the first three of the new season. If 4th isn't better I might punt. 1st episode was a mess.
