Pre-Req- I'm a huge batman nerd. The following may be considered useless to people looking for something more objective. There's very slight spoilers ahead as well.

I just got home from something that has never happened to me before. I've seen a lot of movies that I think are fascinating, but it would be insulting to the director and actors to call this simply a movie. It was an experience, one the likes of which rarely comes to the big screen anymore these days.

I haven't looked forward to a movie like this since....ever, really. I believed all the hype, I followed closely for days every review and avoided every trailer I could. And this thing lived up to the hype and exceeded every word of criticism/applause. 2.5 hours plus of intensity, suspense, drama, heartbreak, action, and it just bleeds off the screen.

I had to sit back a few times and wipe the sweat off of my face, just to collect myself. My knees were shaking, my heart is still pounding.

The Dark Knight is a tragedy at heart. It's very....very dark and at times very disturbing. The Joker cannot be portrayed any better than Heath Ledger did it. Nobody will ever compare to this performance. Oscar or not, he made you believe that the Joker is an anarchist, twisted animal that can't be understood or defeated because he knows what hurts, and understands human nature enough to take advantage of our humanly faults.

Batman, meanwhile, is once again mastered by Christian Bale. It's not until the final few minutes of the film where you truly feel that Batman can stand tall once more. He goes through a mental torment that other superheroes can never understand. This film is a testament to the endurance and strength of the most complicated crime fighter in comic book lore.

I can't imagine how the third film of this expected trilogy will play out. Both Batman Begins and The Dark Knight are two VERY different films, how #3 will go, who knows. But The Dark Knight has me thoroughly satisfied until word comes, if any, about the last chapter of Gotham's defender.

10/10

no he just went in his 54 jersey and orange cleats, the usual.

I only read the first part of his post to avoid the spoilers, not a huge batman fan but I'll definitely be checking this out in the next week.

I was actually dressed as catwoman, only with holes cut out for my nipples.

I work in the neighborhood where they did a lot of filming at. Saw a few cool things on my way to and from lunch. Definitely going to go see it.

Absolutely EPIC experience. Going to see it in IMAX next week once the opening weekend sales taper off. Basically every IMAX showing in Libertyville is sold out until next week sometimes.

SPOILER...

favorite line? "Let me show you a magic trick..." absolutely brilliant.

"Mr. Moviefone" Russ Leatherman gave a really good review this morning with CNN Headline's Robin Meade on her "Morning Express", the Sun-Times' Richard Roeper thought that Heath Ledger gave one of the "most memorable screen characters of the decade", and Roger Ebert gave it 4 stars in the same paper. In fact, Michael Caine predicts an Oscar nomination for Ledger's performance. Because of strong buzz & so many people wanting to see it, this latest "Batman" film will easily be the #1 movie in the country by the end of the weekend.

The last few summers have been laced with superhero movies. We've been inundated with your Spidermans, your Supermans, your Iron Mans, and your Hulks...and get ready for the train to keep rolling--"Watchman" (a DIFFERENT kind of superhero story) is coming out next March.

But it seems as though all of those films were leading up to this, the most anticipated superhero flick possibly in the history of film mainly because of one tragic fact: one of the cast members ultimately died from the intensity of his role. Guess who? Answer at the end of the show.

But with the hype surrounding pretty much every film this summer, finally we have one that lived up to it. "The Dark Knight" is a movie that deserves to be recognized as more than just a comic book movie, but as a great narrative about being a hero, the glory AND the tragedy. What you have to sacrifice, which is what "The Dark Knight" surrounds itself with in theme. Everyone has a price to pay.

Everyone, that is, but the Joker. The Joker, comic book's most devilish anarchist with no real regard for human life (not even his own), used to be more stylized and powerful (Nicholson's Joker in 1989's "Batman" was a perfect representation of that). But in this case, Christopher Nolan offers a more stripped down, and homicidal maniac version of the Joker. The kind of Joker that Frank Miller and Alan Moore invented decades ago. This kind of Joker is the scariest type of villain because he doesn't want anything. As one character in the film says about these kind of people, "They just want to watch the world burn."

The film looks and feels as big as it was advertised, and there are some absolutely breathtaking sequences involving our beloved city. The storyline of the film is just as big, but not over the top the way "Spiderman 3" was (could we really follow all those plot lines?). Here, Nolan and co-writer David S. Goyer ("Blade", "Dark City") paint a masterpiece of narrative, involving very credible subplots involving Bruce Wayne's former squeeze and the always likable Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent. Wayne's own personal demons are understandably pushed aside as most of his woes have been covered brilliantly in "Batman Begins"--and actually, we see the actual Batman emerge as a character rather than just a cool looking dude in a suit who beats up bad guys. Batman has to sacrifice as well, to be a hero.

There are not too many scenes in which you can relax--there is so much action going on that it sometimes feels like a roller coaster. But there is never a moment where the story is betraying your intellect, nor is there a point where you feel like the filmmakers are just showing off their big budget special effects.

This movie is the fastest two and a half hours I've spent in a theatre.

The tragedy of course, is that of our little friend Heath Ledger (yes, he's dead, please...not here too). He transcended the part, the way Nicholson did with 1989's "Batman". He also made the Joker feel as close to the original concept as possible. He's not only maniacal and pathetic and skin-crawlingly creepy--he's also hilarious. Ledger will most likely get an Oscar nomination out of this, and I think that's a bit cynical now. It's not Hollywood's fault that he wouldn't be around for the award ceremony but it is part of an institution that he obviously couldn't handle. I've seen actors play much more intense roles and LIVE (think of his co-star, Christian Bale, in "The Machinist").

But in all honesty, this film deserves at least a Best Screenplay nomination. It's simply one of the best written films I've seen from a big studio in quite a while. It's a shame this will be only noted as "the best comic book film of all time", which would be an appropriate annotation, because it's so much more than that. It looks deep into the human soul, and wretches out the best and worst of us all.

And I haven't even gotten into Harvey Dent's story. But you know, I think it's important not to give too much away. But let's say his isn't disappointing whatsoever. And ultimately, lends more to the theme as well.

This is what big blockbusters are meant to do. Deliver and go beyond. Unlike "Hancock" and "The Incredible Hulk" which still relied on style and aesthetics rather than a deep narrative, "The Dark Knight" gave us what we were looking for.

And that's damn heroic.

:D :D :D :D out of :D :D :D :D

Okay, I just wanted to get this out of the way:

Maggie Ghyllenhall = unattractive.

Katie Holmes isn't bad, but Maggie looks like she's 40+ in this picture, and her saggy tits, lined ass face, and whiny voice made me glad her character did what she did in the film.

  was thinking this too. You know she did used to be pretty cute, in "Secretary" she was pretty hot, and I definitely took notice of her in "Donnie Darko". But in "Dark Knight" she looked sunken.

She's not aging well...and that's unfortunate for her. She is a good actress.

It's only fitting that a picture of Robin would show up in a thread about Batman.

Saw it last night. Was very good. My expectations may have been too high, though. I was expecting an out of body experience after reading all of the reviews. It wa a very good movie. Probably not worthy of the Oscar buzz, though. What do I know, though?

Saw the 725 Imax show last night in woodridge and man alive was that an inexerpience. 1 person got up the whole time during a 2.5 hour movie. Best movie I have ever gone to see. I loved it. Heath Ledger should win an Oscar hands down. Magic Trick anyone?

can't even remember the last time i was to an imax movie. dark knight is rad, but i agree with those who are saying a good portion of the final sequences could have been cut. the absolute final sequence is appropriate, but the, uh, "bat vision" should have been axed. otherwise, yeah, great stuff.

I agree with the people who had the super high expectations. It's a great movie, but not the greatest movie ever. Definitely one of the finest of the decade.
