This flick is a 'must see' for all football fans, or people who want to show their kids some of the BS that
black football players had to put up with back in the early 60s.

Top notch performances by the lead actor (Rob Brown) and also the dependable Dennis Quaid, who seemingly
is in a helluva lot of football movies (Everybody's All American, Any Given Sunday and not The Express).

This guy also had a bit role in the flick as the PA announcer.

Quick question for anybody that saw the flick.... Was that Lonnie Brooks singing at Kingston Mines?

I may have to give Finding Forrester another spin, as Rob Brown was the teen (lead) in that flick opposite Sean Connery.

Finding Forrester is a very good movie IMO. This Kid Rob Brown, has done a fine job in every movie I have seen him in. Not only Finding Forrester, but also Take the Lead, and Coach Carter. I'm not surprised that he would have done a good job in this movie as well. Too bad Ernie Davis was not able to play in the NFL. It's a shame that he died so young.

Why did he "never play a down in the NFL" as the ad says? Did he die before having the chance?

Rob Brown being talented is probably the only thing Elmhurst Steve and I will ever agree on.

yeah, pretty much. think he's the only player in the nfl to have his jersey retired without playing at all. he was diagnosed with leukemia the summer he was drafted by the browns. never got to play in the nfl. very sad end to a very inspirational story.

That is sad. It's also a history changing occurence. If he doesn't get sick, the Browns probably don't draft Jim Brown. I'm certain Brown would've succeeded anywhere, but it would have been in another teams' gear.

No, actually, this was supposed to be set up perfectly for the Browns. They already had Jim Brown. This was hyped as the greatest running back tandem the NFL would have ever seen.

Oops! Thanks for the clarification.

Did you read how they totally made up the part where they were yelling racially insensitive stuff and throwing trash when down in West Virginia? People on that Syracuse team were stunned they put that in the film.

Also... the stadium shots were filmed up in Evanston at Ryan Field.

It was very good. I really liked the insight into the relationship that developed between Jim Brown and Ernie. What a great cast too. The guy who plays his uncle (who was also the head groundskeeper in Rudy) was great, as was Dennis Quaid and of course Rob Brown. The fella that played the left tackle (his good friend-one of 2 other black players on the team) was a bit of a stretch though. He was big, but definitely too fat and not very athletic looking. Definitely one of those movies that will come to mind, when the list of all-time football movies comes up. Not quite there, but close to Remember the Titans, for me.
