Dermot Mulroney is NBC's new Jim Rockford.

In his first regular TV role, Mulroney is set to play the iconic private eye in the network's updated take on the hit 1970s drama that starred James Garner in the title role.

The new Jim Rockford is described as "slightly crumpled, wry humored, cynical, world weary, compassionate when it's called for and easily irritated by morons."

His troubled past includes doing some time as a convict and as a cop.

Aside from an arc on NBC's "Friends" in 2003, "My Best Friend's Wedding" co-star Mulroney has been focused on features, most recently appearing in "Burn After Reading."

NBC's "Rockford Files" was written by "House" creator David Shore, who is executive producing with Steve Carell.

Isn't NBC like 0 for 27 when it comes to these remakes of old shows? Why continue with an idea that is obviously not working?

Oh wait, it's NBC...nevermind.

I was very young when the original series first debuted in 1974. As I've gotten older, I'm become a fan and have tuned in whenever possible. James Garner became a very rich man as a result of this classic cop show.

And you think Rockford Files is cool,
But there are some things that you would change if it were up to you
So think about your masterpiece,
Watch the Rockford files, call to see if Paul can score some weed.

He is charming and handsome and at the same time a little rugged. He has a toughness and vulnerability. Somebody your parents would like and friends would want. He's has these great rare qualities but he is still not hot. Just doesn't make my knees buckle and is not vibrator material.

You are better looking than I thought you'd be. You have a powerful jaw and are a beautiful shade of orange that can not be captured on the computer.

Has anyone seen any of Dermot Mulroney's body of work before being cast in NBC's upcoming remake of "The Rockford Files"? :? Needless to say, it'll be a departure compared to what James Garner did before the original debuted in '74.

Hands down, my favorite TV show.

Big mistake on this. No need to remake. The original stands on it's own merits.

Waiting for the box set.

He was quite funny as Jack Nicholson's son-in-law to be in About Schmidt and solid as the police captain in Zodiac, but how those transfer to the Rockford Files is beyond me.

I was a huge James Garner & Rockford Files fan. Based on the picture of this Douchebag, I won't watch the remake.

 How do you people just let this slide?

1. Then who is this type of "material"?
2. Any other details would would probably be accepted about this topic as well.
