G'day,
Saw Iron Man this morning at the 11:00 showing. The movie has excellent cinematagraphy and some really fantastic action sequences. The best action though is watching the eye candy in the form of Scarlett Johansson. She looks fantastic in this. A movie like this might get lost in the expanded array of characters that get introduced but not in Iron Man 2. Everybody gets a chance to display their acting chops, from Mickey Rourke as the villian Whiplash to the limited role by Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. It's a fun movie to watch, with the only complaint being a few more appearances by the title character would not have hurt. The movie violence is of the harmless variety for the most part. It is smart, funny, very cool and I give it 3.5 stars.

Iron Man 2: A Love Letter To Ronald Reagan

America just might have found itself its truest superhero. Who needs Superman when there’s Iron Man 2? Tony Stark isn’t just a patriot and a lifesaver. He’s bold, he’s clever, he’s rich, he’s a capitalist individualist defender of property rights. And he likes to give speeches surrounded by dancing girls.

Iron Man was fun but Iron Man 2 is even better, with a script (by Justin Theroux) so laced with wit that it if you took away the fireballs and just had actors reading it on a bare stage like a Noel Coward piece, it would still be an entertaining evening.

The main flaws of the first film — let’s face it, the finale with Jeff Bridges was a bore, and so was Terrence Howard, the blandest buddy since Robin — are gone in the sequel. This one features nifty fireworks — including a nifty Monte Carlo race scene — plus two excellent yet very different villains (Sam Rockwell and Mickey Rourke), the superb Don Cheadle stepping in for Howard (who reportedly demanded more money than the producers were willing to pay), just enough Nicky Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) to make us want more, and a blowout of an ending.

Oh yeah, and the movie is also a virtual love letter to Ronald Reagan.

Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr., whose performance seems meant to school Christian Bale in the art of playing things loose) finds himself in trouble with a weaselly senator (Garry Shandling). The lawmaker accuses Stark, who has been boasting to the world of his ability to keep the peace, of purposely developing an offensive weapon that he misleadingly calls a defensive weapon.

That this is exactly the argument liberals (and the Soviets) used to excoriate Ronald Reagan and his SDI plan is delicious — but it gets better. As played by Shandling, the senator, who is from Pennsylvania, bears more than a slight resemblance to Arlen Specter, the classic Capitol Hill weasel who called himself a Republican for as long as he found it convenient and is now not only a Democrat but one of the most reliably liberal members of his caucus.

Still better: In front of Congress, which Tony rightly mocks as his intellectual and moral inferiors, he delivers a stout defense of private property when the senator demands that he simply turn over the blueprints to his Iron Man suit. Stark points out that the country is doomed if it has to rely for its defense on the government’s chosen contractor, headed by a corporate tool named Justin Hammer (Rockwell) who thinks he is as smart as Tony but isn’t, quite.

But it is political. Movies are often 'message' movies. Avatar has a childish eco story with US troops as bad guys.
Iron Man is the opposite. The review I posted isn't 'spin'. It's a conservative message movie that will still make zillions.
Ronald Reagan Lives!

Or even geeky whom is hottest girl in the Whedonverse.
I mean she is hot just I don't see why all the hub bub

yeah maybe it'll make back the debt reagan put us in. but i've never heard of a movie making 3 trillion dollars. "avatar" came the closest.

movies are never green lit for their message. they're green lit for their profitability.

"an inconvenient truth" was never green lit. it was an independent film. it had no distributor at the time it premiered at the sundance film festival in '06 if i recall correctly. paramount classics picked it up after that.

WTF man, I wasn't stalking you, Mr. Paranoidball. I was referencing a post by TTB where he was complaining that his buddies did not want to go to the first showing of the movie.

Went to see this evening. Very strong movie esp by some of the bit parts Gary Shandling, the guys playing agent Colsten and Mr Hammer. The one performance I was disappointed in was Roake, after the Wrestler you expect a lot from him but still a good performance. The only two really bad things for me and I am a huge shellhead fan was not enough of the suit and please the black widow was just there for eye candy did nothing really at all to further the plot. The suits looked awesome esp the suitcase one. I loved the little inside bits and the after credits was cool as well, another avenger unmasked. Also I did not like that they never let out the name of the element he invented, it is important for future stories esp capts new shield. Was also very impressed as usual with Sam Jackson, thank god they let him streach his chops unlike in Star wars. We have 4 Avengers shown, only 3 left to introduce.

Very Solid movie I give it 4 1/2 out of 5

Saw it last night and thought it was good. Was a little dissapointed in the final fight. After all the chasing and fighting the drones, the 'big' fight was pretty quick and kind of boring. We stayed for after the credits and whatever....they spent a lot of money to setup a couple seconds of a hammer sticking out of the sand.

The movie plot is basically taken from the original Tales of Suspense, circa 1968, with some updates so the character is not Vietnam-centric & Nick Fury now is a black guy. Love letters to the then-governor of California? No.

That's okay. If they follow this through the mid-70s story lines, he'll be liberal.

Amazing, just amazing. You got 50 years continuity with this character, and base the movie on the first 3 years. Either all the fans know/remember/want to see a movie based on the 60s character, or they're saying 70s-present story lines sucked. In which case, LOL, why the re-imagined Nick Fury?

They are kind of mixing the stuff because they are doing mostly the Ultimates universe. Not a lot to work with , some ver cool and awesome storylines though.I never seen Tony as either Liberal or Conservative. He is pro 2nd amendment(the Suit is the ultimate personal firearm) but anti-war.

Can anyone name the 3 Avengers they have not hinted at yet?
Edit : Hint it is not the Original comic book lineup.

Except he owns a munitions company. This vexed certain writers mightily, who had him get out of munitions (but still supply stuff to Shield -- the Homeland Security on steroids) and end up as a company of three working in a geodesic dome in the middle of a field. Stupid, stupid, stupid stuff.

Wanda, Pietro, Vision (not BAD Vision!)

Well,from the original there is Giant-Man,Hawkeye,The Wasp & Sub-Mariner.
as far as not the original, there has been about 190 different Avengers over the years.
Don't follow, unless you mean The Vision,The Black Knight & Black Panther from the 70's?
