This snuck up on me somehow. I didn't even know there was a part 2 in production. I was looking for movies for tomorrow night and thought it was the original being played as part of a double feature until I saw the coming attraction.

I will probably go to see this by myself, as I don't have any horror movie fan friends. However, my initial reaction is that it did not really need a subsequent movie. The original ended poorly and I think they should have just let it be.

Alone but never lonely. A movie really doesn't need to be a communal experience anyway.

Looking at the early reviews, it is getting universal praise and being hailed as better than the original. It also features the buxsom girl from the original. No word on whether she let's Old Scratch finally get a look at those milk mounds.

The original reminded me of the Blair Witch Project...the only thing scary about those movies where how bad they were. My gf better not get any ideas either...

It's actually got both original actors involved. This one actually takes place about 3 months before the original, and involves the original chick's sister.

i think the trailer had "praise" quotes...that's usually not a good sign.

this looks like it'll be awfully obvious, and none of the shots even looked scary. this is just cashing in.

So I saw this yesterday...I thought it was some pretty cheap scares and an unsatisfying extension of the original story line. It was a decent enough movie if you just want to go for a couple of scares but nothing that deserves as much money as it is making. I'd give it 2 stars.

SPOILERS

-OK, so now I am to believe that several generations ago a relative of the tormented sisters made a deal with the devil for wealth and power? Well, where's the wealth? One is living in a unspectacular suburban townhome and the other is living in a nice house because her husband owns several Burger King franchises. If I'm making a deal with the devil, I'd require the kind of money that lasts forever.

-the deal was in exchange for the next male child born into the family...so why was the demon harassing two young girls? It has no claim so why is it making everyone's life miserable before the girls are of child bearing age?

-so anyone can cast out demons with a cross and olive oil?

-How do you figure you can send a demon out to your sister in law and that it isn't going to come back to get you? The demon has a claim, he's going to come to enforce it. So you just wait 3 weeks for her to hunt you down rather than going out and trying to find out what happened to her. It's cold hearted and stupid.

-Hey Katie Featherston, the first one was low budget and you probably never thought it would make a big screen. You knew this one was going to be a big hit. Put down the fork for a couple of months before the shoot to present yourself in the best light. Big boobs are great unless they are sloppy kneeshooters.

Agreed GD. It's really pretty meh. It's somewhat entertaining while at the theater, but you'll forget about it the moment you walk out.

No clue. My GF thought it said kill. Just looked like tally marks really.

Edit: Some quick gooogling seems to find a consensus that it is 'Melk' which is apparently Latin for Mine meaning possessed.

That looks like it said Melky, but like the Yankees and Braves, I don't think the devil would have any use for him either.

Oh, and nice freaky paintings of African tribesmen. Who would ever hang that stuff in his house? It was the best backround artwork in a movie that I have seen since The Royal Tanenbaums.

Thinking about it a little more, most good horror movies are tapping into some fear beyond what is being portrayed in the movie. On a psychological level the original Paranomal Activity is dealing with the fear of a young person giving himself/herself entirely to the other. If you watch the movie closely that really comes in loud and clear. They are living together, unmarried in a married couples suburban environment. Her complaint even as things are breaking down is that he dismisses her deepest cares and fears. He hides behind the camera rather than having to deal with the issue. The real fear in the movie is her silently hovering over him at night when he is vulnerable in sleep, not that a demon is going to get them.

Part 2 tries to tap into that, but it does not work as well as this is an older couple. It goes the cheap route of playing on the fear a new parent has for the safety of his child (although I was kind of suprised at the lack of attention she had for him as a first time mom). I think it could have been interesting to explore the dynamic between a step child and step parent or of a child pursuing the memory of a dead parent. The movie momentarily touches on these two themes but quickly retreats.
