Watching it again tonight (and if you've never seen it, you must), why is Bert the cop wearing an accordion when he brings Harry into the house from the airport in a blizzard?

Also, Donna Reed staring directly into the camera on the final shot has always bugged me.

Why not wear an accordion? Bert was a festive guy, and needed to be able to break into song at a moments notice.

we watch it every christmas eve. my dad has a model set of bedford falls he puts up on a coffee table in the living room.

my favorite line in the film is from Mary:

"George, why must you torture the children?"

loved seeing alfalfa get some work post rascals.

I used to love this movie, but I have watched it way too many times.
Now when George jumps off the bridge, I pray that Clarence doesn't show up.

My tradition is to watch Badder Santa w/ Billy Bob Thorton....and then Elf w/ Will Ferrell.

Donna Reed was an incredibly beautiful woman back in the day.

I kinda like the " why do we have to have all of these kids anyway" line. Though its hard to watch this movie and not think goddamn , Pottersville looked like a pretty swinging fucking town, whores, booze, gambling and lap dances that Potter could never feel. George running through the town after getting his life back is one of my favorite scenes ever, and anyone that doesnt like it or gives me shit for it can fuck right off :)

The scene where Potter offers George a job is one of the best scenes in movie history in both story and acting.

I'm kind of shocked that they haven't found deleted scenes or stuff of that nature, with as many times as it gets shown...

I love her rack in the scene when they move the Italian immigrants and their 100 children into a two bedroom shack in George's subdivision.

How can you not like it if you are either a father or son? It's the story of devotion to both the family you are born into and the one you choose. Every single family man faces George's dilemma (on a macro level) at some point in his life. Stay for the greater good or pursue something that might be more personally satisfying. The story is truth wrapped in syrupy sweet package but it is truth.

That's what's great about the job offer scene.

The man is given the dream at, what he soon realizes, is the expense of his soul and, even though it means giving up everything he ever thought he wanted, he still cannot get himself to sell-out. You see the realization on his face that his life will never be what he had hoped it would be. The rest of the film is his coming to terms and understanding what he has and what he really wants for his life.

spanky has no soul.

No Joliet home for me. You must have a different spanky in mind.

True, I have no soul. :(
But I am overflowing with soul. :afro:

It just plain sucks. That's all there is to it. You'd be hard pressed to find a film that old that stands the test of time, however...

Most black & white movies suck....except for Clerks....and Young Frankenstein......but the old B&W movies all suck now...

I'm going to disagree on Casablanca, Citizen Kane, and The Maltese Falcon.
