Saw this show last night on TLC? I think

I have to admit, it was pretty awesome seeing these "Professinal Couponers" a they call themselves, get these deals.

One lady goes to the grocery store and buys $650 worth of stuff for $3!!!!!! after all discounts.

Another guy got $1550 worth of stuff for $80

The guy at least has a 2 car garage whe he stores everything, so it is like his own minimart in his house. The lady had an apartment filled with this stuff, didnt look too good.

Example from the guy:

Liquid soap $1.99
Coupon: .99 cents off
Store doubles coupons so (which I never herd of)
$1.98 off
Thus 1 cent for the liquid soap.
No limit, just need a coupon for each you buy. He had 300 coupons
300 liquid soaps for $3.00
Never needs liquid hand soap again.
Toothpaste,Toilet paper, Paper towels, etc.

My favorite was TOTAL cereal, FREE with Coupon.1000 coupons, took home 1000 boxes of cereal to Churchs food bank.

Sure it was crazy, but kinda cool.

I used to work with a lady who did this. She would ask everyone to bring in their newspapers and she would take all of the coupons out of them. She never paid more than a few cents for anything like soap, shampoo, toilet paper etc...

I would have charged her for my newspaper.

I didnt care and she brought in food a lot since she got stuff for 12 cents. She studied all of the sales ads and coupons and she had a huge binder full of coupons. It was quite the operation she was running.

This guy has like a mini store in his basement and garage.

The lady walks 2 hours to work every morning and she stops at a ton of places that save the daily circular for her, which she then cuts out and organizes them.

They only buy like 10-20 different items, but like 100 of each

I do think you need that extra space to put all that stuff somewhere.

There's a website (grocerygame.com, maybe???) that does some of the work for you. They match up the circulars with manufacturers coupons and random store coupons and create a list each week of how and where the bargains are and they rank them by how good of bargain it is in regards to % saved off normal price. (the rankings are like, "only if you need it" or "buy a couple" or "back up the truck", etc.)

It used to be a couple weeks free trial and then you have to pay a small fee for it. Cutting all the coupons was just more work than I wanted to do.

Doubling just means the value of the coupon is doubled. They don't do that anywhere in Chicago, except for Kmart every so often.

I think there are people who understand coupons and who don't. If you just make fun of people who do it then you obviously don't get it.

How could a normally functioning adult not understand coupons?

These folks are all into that kind of stuff. Plus it's worth a quick look if you're looking to make a decent-sized purchase on the internet for codes to save you money on shipping or things like that; a quick search (yes, their search function works beautifully :D ) might save you some decent coin occasionally. Rarely does some joker post something that's fake, and even then it's ferreted out quickly.

My wife uses this site all the time and has saved a lot of money as a result.

For a couple months a while back I did coupon. The realization of savings gives you a strange rush. I imagine this is what gamblers experience. The whole thing requires a lot of diligence and a very structured existence though... no eating out, no on a spot consumption of anything since you have loads of stuff at home. That got old fast. Structured existence is a luxury that I do not possess.

I don't think you to have to be real serious about it for it to be worthwhile. Even if you just use coupons at fast food places you're not doing too bad. Great Clips takes expired coupons and current competitor's coupons like $5 off hair cut at Sport's Clips (makes for $8 haircut at Great Clips). You can use coupons at the pizza place and you'll save 25% on your order. A site like Restaurant.com will save you some money on a meal with their coupons. So it's not as if you have to go all nuts with it to reap some benefits. You can just do simple deals and not allow it to take up all your time.
