I really really really liked the first new Star Trek movie, and really enjoyed the most recent one.

Before seeing the first new one, I never liked Star Trek. I really know nothing about it, short of the stuff I hear on Stern from Takei.

Knowing this, I need your opinion. Would you recommend watching any of the TV series? If so, which series? Where to start? Any series to skip? Skip the series and watch only the old movies?

I know this is a lot, just trying to gauge if it would be worth my time to go back and watch any of the old Star Trek stuff.

Just watch "The Trouble with Tribbles".
That's all the Star Trek you need.

i'd say before you try watching any of the TV series, watch these two films:

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
Star Trek: First Contact

Both of these films perfectly capture what made each respective series great. II for the OS, FC for TNG.

If either piques your interest, the best way to start watching either series is honestly going on google and finding some Trekkie's top 10 episodes. they're usually on point. i didn't follow either series hardcore enough to start spouting off classic episodes.

Having grown up with Next Generation and DS9, I would say lean towards those. Original series just wasn't as good.

Balance of Terror was the best ToS episode. TNG didn't hit its stride until season 3-4, although there were some good single episodes before then. DS9 was pretty good. Voyager was pretty bad and Janeway was the worst captain of any series. Enterprise I waver on, the Suliban as Taliban was pretty heavy handed and the Temporal Time War was weird but it ended just as it found it's stride. By the end there were all sorts of crossovers. Riker was on the last episode of Enterprise. There was a DS9/TNG one. Spock, Bones, Sarek, and Scotty were all in TNG. Sulu was in DS9. Probably missed a few.

I don't get the DS9 love. IMO that was the weakest of all the series by far.

I always like the Bread and Circuses episode and Who Mourns for Adonis? episode of the original series.

But, as stated earlier, TNG is by far the better overall TV series. The first season pretty much blows. If Riker doesn't have a beard, it's probably a bad episode. The fatter he gets, the better the quality of show.

That said, it's probably worth watching TNG from the beginning since the real quality in that show is understanding the characters and their interactions with each other and seeing how they all develop. There are many great episodes but I think Chain of Command is stellar.

Agree with kd on Enterprise, it didn't start getting good until it was already cancelled and I guess just decided to throw everything at the wall. I enjoyed Season 3 quite a bit. I don't think you need to watch 1 and 2 to enjoy Season 3.

Agreed on TNG. Seasons 1 & 2 are meh, but it really gets great from 3-7. Season 7 kinda slowed down for me, but it's still better than the early ones.

I'd say any episode where Riker is beardless is bad, and any episode with the Old Lady Doctor is also bad.

Heard Jonathan Frakes interviewed on NPR about this. Cracked me up.

Think he's directing an upcoming Agents of SHIELD episode.

Mirror, Mirror
