My vote would go to The Client (Grisham). I really liked the book and they really nailed the movie. Great character development and suspense in both.

i can't pick just one. there are a bunch. this is why god invented lists.

"The Maltese Falcon"
"Jaws"
"One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"
"Of Mice and Men" (1992)
"The Last Temptation of Christ"
"The Thing"
"Jarhead"
"Private Parts"
"Ordinary People"
"The Color Purple"

...there's more...

i'm going to start a thread for the other side of the coin here.

Manhunter, M Mann hit the mood of the book right on the head.
Red Dragon was a lesser remake.

Lord of the rings Trilogy

The lord of the rings trilogy is great it is a great adaptation of the parts of the books that they use, I was disappointed that they didn't do more from the final book, but I understand...afterall they couldn't make a 12 hour third movie.

I'd add Sin City to this list.

sure i guess we can include graphic novels.

in that case, "a history of violence" comes to mind. and i'd agree with "sin city". it's one of my favorite recent movies.

"Children of Men" was also based on a book, and I loved that movie.

"There Will Be Blood" is another, although it's only very loosely based on "Oil!" by Upton Sinclair.
