I saw this yesterday afternoon but it took me a little while to figure out how I felt about it...it's an easy movie to like because it does a very good job at showing what addiction does to people. But that's more of a testament to Denzel's excellent performance rather than the somewhat tepid script and the off-pace direction of Rob Zemekis.

After the gripping first half hour involving the plane landing, the film starts to meander a bit on what it's going to be about. On the one hand, it's definitely a character study about addiction. Whitaker (Washington) is an alcoholic, but he's also sort of a casual drug user.

You have another story involving a former heroin addict, Nicole, who gets clean from a hospital visit (?); but as far as I know, heroin's one of the hardest drugs to quit, and she doesn't seem to have much of a problem.

I also had problems with the fact that we never get the "hero worship" angle that was begging to be tapped into seeing as how the guy saved 96 people on a plane that was supposed to crash and didn't. not to mention i'd have a hard time believing that the investigation would've harped on the toxicology report, because that's just bad PR.

it also never really seemed to give drama to the story. i never felt that whitaker was in jeopardy of anything.

And finally, there was a really murky "god" subtext that just felt weird. There was an awkward scene with the co-pilot and his wife that just made no sense at all.

A better script and more focused direction from Zemekis would've made this an instant classic. but it was not up to Denzel's absolutely brilliant performance. It's a shame, too, because I've been waiting for him to deliver a great performance in a great movie. Well the former happened but not the latter.

If you're strugging with addiction, I'd recommend it. His treatment of what it is to be a drunk and doper is spot on. But the film itself kind of gets lost in its muddled execution of an admirable message.

Nice wrap up. The God piece seemed to be infused to give some reason for his choices at the end of the movie. Didn't feel it was nearly as believable as it should have been. I also enjoyed the small role John Goodman played.

As much as we like to joke around with Zack for his reviews that seem maybe a little elitist, this is really pretty spot. I liked it a little better than he did.

The whole thing looks contrived and more like a made-for-TV movie.

Denzel's next big thing is "The Equalizer". Adapted from the excellent TV show.

because it was literally thrown in there. it didn't work because it wasn't fleshed out well enough. i don't know that zemekis wanted to make a statement about religion or faith and i'm not sure the script had more to do with that and it was just cut. it just didn't work for me.

the film had to be broader in its approach to some of the themes it plays around with. it became very tunnelvisioned.

Is it bad that watching this film made me want to have a big ol' glass of vodka?

I was glad that Denzel got an Oscar nod for his performance. I found it to be quite believable and
was certainly painful to watch in parts.

I liked it a lot as I can relate heavily to the subject matter. Even if it totally sucked, it would still be worth a viewing for the smoking hot Nadine Velasquez full frontal nudity. Denzel knows how to get the Latinas to strip for him on screen.

Twenty minutes too long.
After the crash, everything dragged.
Denzel is always great.
The ending was the only thing they could have done that was appropriate.

I can relate as well which made it more interesting to me even though as Zack pointed out the screenplay itself
wasn't the greatest. I also concur that Ms. Velasquez brought the goods and it was a nice way to begin the
movie before the tension started building like crazy.

This was the first non-Pixar movie I've seen in a year.

It was a "C" at best. It dragged in the middle. Plus the conspiracist in me says it was a 2 hour effort to tell the world how bad alcohol is compared to other drugs.

Dude woke up in the morning, smoked a doob, snorted a line and took one sip of beer. While Catarina strutted around naked (sidenote: I like the depth of that actress - in "Earl" she is a maid named "Catalina" but in this movie she is able to to change things up and play a flight attendant named "Catarina". Deep...)
Then he got on a 40 minute flight from Orlando to Atlanta and drank vodka halfway through it. Then the rest of the movie was focused on the vodka. Not one single mention of the doob at all in any part of the movie, and only one mention of the coke prior to the coke "saving the day" to allow him to actually testify after breaking into that mini-bar and drinking the devil's water ...........yeah, right. The NTSB would be killing him for all 3 substances in his blood, not just the alcohol. But the entire movie focused on alcohol, nothing else.

And........Bad ending.
