Kevin Smith has announced that he is planning to make Clerks III.

In bittersweet news for fans, the sequel will be his final movie as writer-director. Smith had been intending to bow out of film-making with a hockey comedy called Hit Somebody, based on the Warren Zevon track 'Hit Somebody (The Hockey Song). However, that project has now been re-imagined as a TV mini-series.

Smith took to Twitter to unveil his plans, posting the following message:
"So with the HIT SOMEBODY shift, the minute Jeff Anderson signs on, my last cinematic effort as a writer/director will be CLERKS III.#TaDa"
KevinSmith (@ThatKevinSmith) December 7, 2012

Responding to questions from his followers, Smith went on to reveal that he already has a "70 page outline for Clerks III", and predicted that "transitioning to [a] full script won't take long". He also confirmed that the new movie will be shot in black and white like the original Clerks.

I guess the good news is that this will be his last film. He should have stopped after Dogma.

Yep. Clerks 2 was fucking terrible. Im pretty sure I wont even watch this in a couple years when it's free on tv. I actually thought Red State was ok, but I agree with DB that he really doesn't make good movies anymore.

every single movie he has done since Clerks has been complete garbage. There isn't a worse and more overrated writer/director in the history of film.

Wrong.

Mallrats was good.
Chasing Amy & Dogma were great.

I enjoy Kevin's podcasts and Comic Book Men on AMC. I liked both Clerk movies despite the shocking tasteless humor that pervades both attempts at comedy.

Mallrats fucking sucked and was basically a word for word rehash of the same dialogue in Clerks, including yet another Star Wars debate.

Chasing Amy and Dogma were garbage movies with terrible unbelievable dialogue and anyone who enjoyed those "films" is an idiot.

Clerks, Mallrats and Dogma. Keep the rest.

I'm going to buy every hockey rink in the tri-state area and ban shakes from them all.

Scenes with Scott Mosier are some of my favorites.

I consider Dogma just ok, but I would still have it at #3 on Smith movies. Clerks and Mallrats were great. Anyone who likes Clerks and hates Mallrats is a confused moron.

Slight difference. Clerks was hilarious, Mallrats was clerks recycyled but in color and not funny.

I didn't mind Clerks 2. I felt it was better than most of the movies he's made in the last fifteen years. His scripts do suffer from unbelievable dialogue and I feel he often could have used an editor to help him write and cut down on the preachy mini-monologues his characters tend to have.

Clerks is one of the funniest movies ever. There are countless lines that we could all quote off the top of our heads.

I can't think of one single funny line in Mallrats that is quote worthy 20 years later like Clerks.

Randall was such an awesome character I went out and got a job at Coconuts at Diversey and Sheffield my 3rd year of law school just so I could act like him. I ended up getting fired after a month because of "numerous complaints from customers and co-workers".
