Back in 2009, it was the end of an era in late night TV as Jay Leno was shown the door as host of "The Tonight Show" in favor of Conan O'Brien, then the host of "Late Night" on NBC. The network also tried something different when NBC dropped scripted dramas in the 9P hour weeknights in favor of a primetime hour hosted by Leno himself.

After complaints from affiliates across America when ratings cut into local, late news on NBC stations everywhere, Leno's primetime show was yanked, and O'Brien refused to move "The Tonight Show" a half hour later from 10:35P to 11:05P (CT), NBC ended up giving Conan a $33 million buyout and Jay was back as host of "The Tonight Show" in early 2010.

While Conan has since resurfaced on TBS, Jay hasn't exactly been the ratings draw in his second tour of duty as "Tonight Show" host. Yesterday, NBC revealed that Jimmy Fallon, who replaced O'Brien as host of NBC's "Late Night" in 2009, will soon replace Leno as new "Tonight Show" host...in 2014. The news comes not just because of lower ratings for "Tonight", but a Los Angeles Times report last year that revealed that the show had been losing money for NBC and that Leno's own contract expires in September of this year.

In addition to Fallon taking over as new host next spring, NBC is also constructing a new set to coincide with Jimmy replacing Jay. That new set is being constructed in New York, not Burbank, CA. NBC has also announced plans to relocate the long-running celebrity gabfest from Burbank, its home since 1972, to NYC starting next year. While most people in this generation know Burbank as the home of "The Tonight Show", the show originally premiered in 1954 with the late, great Steve Allen as host originating the show from New York. The new set being constructed for Fallon next year is said to be built on the same site where Allen started "Tonight" 5 decades ago.

It also comes as new competition such as E!'s "Chelsea Lately", hosted by comedienne Chelsea Handler, Comedy Central's "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" & "The Colbert Report" with Stephen Colbert, as well as "Conan" on TBS have also found their footing as late night alternatives.

"Conan" has signed a new deal until 2015. It's not leaving TBS anytime soon.

The story involves Jay Leno on his way out again...this time in favor of Jimmy Fallon.

Hey,Don't forget Arsenio. He is about 1000 times worse than Jay Leno.

I've also heard the name Howard Stern for Fallon, too.

Another smirking pretty boy with little or no polish.

I'm funnier than both those clowns in my sleep. I have seen Fallon in person. His humor is more clever than funny.

No wonder you don't like him.

Before your time but I loved Johnny Carson in his prime. Letterman's humor is very in sync with my own but his politics is making the show unwatchable.

I very seldom watch any late night tv anymore.

Speaking of Kilborn, the onetime former "ESPN SportsCenter" anchor, original host of Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" & former host of "The Late, Late Show" on CBS attempted a comeback 2 years ago.

Kilborn hosted a short-lived show on some FOX stations, but not in Chicago, called "The Kilborn File". It featured 2 signature segments from Craig's old shows, "The Daily Show" & "The Late, Late Show", such as "Yambo" & "5 Questions", and aired for about 6 weeks in the summer of 2010. 20th Century FOX Television, which is a unit of FOX's parent company News Corp., didn't renew the short-lived show.

Krazy, that's because Chicago was NOT one of the 6 cities that FOX tested the short-lived "Kilborn File" in 2010.

so who's gonna come in this thread and ask if jimmy fallon is gonna change the face of television when he takes over the tonight show?

cuz you know that conan, fresh off of the controversy and $43-50mil "go the fuck away" present was clearly gonna change the way we watch tv..... int he rigid structure of a late night talk show. lol

Why does NBC hate Leno? All he does is win.

I think they can't wrap their minds around how well he does so well in the ratings. I can't figure it out either...

We had the debate here a few years ago and I was just about the only one that loved the show. I don't watch it much anymore but I suspect older people still do. Young people will either be in the bed or watching Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert.

Rumors of Stern taking over a job are always planted by Stern's agent.

Cornball comedy + low offensive humor + populism = ratings gold.

The senior circuit & "Middle America" seems to eat that up.
