Is it just me or does this look like a DOA, dog shit of a film?

Looks ok to me. I think I read that this is like the 7th time they have done this movie. The book is great but
not sure why they can't seem to nail it on screen.

The "Baz Luhrmann"-ing of the story interests me, but it's my favorite book of all time so I do not think it will meet my expectations.

Rodney rarely ever played a role in a film. He was just Rodney. His best acting work was probably either Easy Money or Natural Born Killers

I loved back to school. It featured 80s typecast bad guy William Zabka, Paulie from Rocky, Robert Downey Jr., Kurt Vonnegut and zoning discussion.

Flunk me? Flunk you!

Maybe one day Will Ferrell can make a film half as funny as Back to School

Flunk me? Flunk you!

Also Sam Kinison and Ned Beatty

Also a time when a man could mistakenly walk into a sorority, walk into the shower and see a college student naked and take care of it with a few dollar bills to a cop.

We rented that movie and Peggy Sue Got Married and the store went out of business before they were due, so we got to keep them.

A young rpb watched that shower scene more than a few times.

Maybe Rodney should have made more funny movies instead of stopping in the 80s and we wouldn't need Will Ferrell.

The business of America is business and the business of an educational institution such as ours is to create young minds that understand what business that is.

Some of the most terminally boring people I know love Will Ferrell, not in the sense of liking things that Will Ferrell happens to be in but specifically identifying an affinity for Will Ferrell.

I'll give Baz the benefit of the doubt. Strictly Ballroom completely surprised me, Moulin Rouge was fun, and I thought I'd hate Romeo + Juliet but it was also pretty sweet.

the film version with redford was about as good as you're gonna get as far as a film adaptation.

i predict this movie will tank. first weekend may be a big one because theatres will be full of 11th grade high schoolers getting extra credit or taken by their english teachers. after that it'll be dead in the water, because "star trek" will come out. what a stupid time to release a film like this.

Blockbusters are made at the box office by young people. Who the fuck is going to go see this in May?

Old School was solid. Anchorman, Step Bros. & The Other Guys were fucking brilliant.

I'm not really addressing the financial success of the movie. I pretty much expect the american public to run from a movie adapted from a classic book and run to anything with a I, II, or III at the end of the title. I just think this will be a bad movie artistically.

the reviews seem to be bearing out my opinion

overly grandiose to the point of deluting a great story

It's a great novel, but I'm not sure if it's a great story. Much of Gatsby's genius lies in Nick Carraway's narration, which would be difficult to translate for cinematic purposes, especially for a champion of the obvious like Baz Luhrmann.

for what it's worth...WGN TV's Dean Richards loved it. He felt the "grandiosity" helped illustrate the energy associated with the period.
