I saw two of those movies so far. 12 years a Slave was really good, worthy of a nomination. Captain Phillips was good, but I don't really think it was Oscar worthy.

No clue why Gravity got nominated. The movie was average at best.

I’ve been unable to let my dislike of “Gravity” go, and so, the other day, I found myself arguing about the movie with some friends in a bar. They claimed, correctly, that “Gravity” was visually astounding; I replied that its story was predictable (of course she’s going to survive!) and that its dialogue was absurd (“Tell her that Momma found her red shoe”). Then an idea arrived from nowhere, as though delivered by an imaginary spaceman: someone should replace the “Gravity” soundtrack with “The Dark Side of the Moon.” That would be entertaining, maybe.

hey SomeGuy, look...there's a bigger asshole out there than me. and he works for the new yorker. which means he's more dangerous.

fuck this guy. talk about missing the point entirely.

I didn't see these movies, but from what I've heard I have no idea why Gravity was nominated. Was it an allegory for gay marriage or anti-corporatism?

12 years a Slave should win. It was so good I was watching and wishing he was a slave for longer cause I didn't want it to end. 30 years a Slave would've been epic, maybe even a trilogy!

Folks panning Gravity/Capt Phillips: are you seeing these in a full-on theater setting or at home? 60 inch HD flat-screen with surround sound is nice and all, but not the same as the full-on theater experience. I think both had more impact in the theater vs at home. I mean, Sandra Bullock in yoga pants for 2 hours....

Well, to be fair, there's no chicks in Capt Phillips. I would totally watch the Somalian pirates in yoga pants.

I don't need a 100-ft screen to get the full effect of the inside of a rescue life boat from a cargo ship. It's a good movie.

I saw it at the drive in.

Good idea to stay behind the wheel of your BWM at all times, in case the FIL makes a run at your gutters.

Eh, Capt Phillips final 30 minutes are much more claustrophobic/intense in a theater than at home, no matter how good the home theater system.

Plucky Somali Pirates in Yoga Pants---playing Pitchfork this year.

If a movie is Oscar worthy it shouldn't need the Avatar treatment to realize its potential.

Captain Phil was a good movie, not amazing by any stretch.

I'll watch Gravity soon, although I might rent Nebraska first.

Ding Ding...

...though I would argue Gravity was considerably better than Avatar, but that's besides the point.

Saw Capt Phillips, Dallas Buyers Club, Nebraska, and Gravity. I thought the special effects were impressive
in Gravity but the acting and story were just kinda blah. I found Capt Phillips to be pretty good and the last
30 minutes was pretty intense. I didn't really know how that all unfolded at the end. Dallas Buyers Club
was really good and the best acting I saw in any of the films.

We watched Dallas Buyers Club last night. It was pretty damn good.

Is it wrong that I got a little chubbed up during the scene in 12 Years a Slave Where the woman rolled over and forced the guy to finger bang her?

by the way, it wasn't the best movie of the year. It was more a collection of scenes than a coherent story...and, of course, it won best adaptation.

Gravity was a good technical movie and deserved some technical awards, and maybe even for director, but as said above, the story, dialogue, and acting was merely OK, not great. Plot could have been much less ridiculous, and the movie still would have achieved what it did.

Sandra Bullock? Still very much would, especially last night.
