I was going to watch this tonight, but I was late getting home from exercising, so I'll just watch the whole thing later.

I did notice that the big premiere is being simulcast across the entire Viacom family of networks. This makes me feel a little weird. I remember one other time when all the channels in a media conglomerate's portfolio were all airing the same thing, and it was when someone flew an airplane into the World Trade Center. I'm sure the viewers of MTV2, Logo, BET, and CMT would like to watch their regularly scheduled programming, and if they would not, then Comedy Central is right there for them.

In the two minutes I did watch, I felt like I was watching the fourth act of a three-act play. I know that there was a Daily Show before Jon Stewart, Weekend Update has endured through many great hosts and many more bad ones, and that late-night shows across television are enjoying new hosts, but this feels different. Can't we hang the Mission Accomplished banner on the Daily Show? To say nothing of what Jon Stewart himself has accomplished, we've seen Steve Carell star in a generational sitcom, Ed Helms become a movie star, Stephen Colbert host a highly successful spinoff and then get Letterman's show, and then there's John Oliver, who took the Daily Show format and turned it into an F-bombing precision strike. Even Samantha Bee is getting a talk show! What's left for the old show?

i think it's become a staple, and a crop of new kids may continue to watch because it's an "answer" to the news media. the show was very different from kilborn to stewart...if noah tries to do what stewart did, maybe the show will ultimately bomb out unless noah can somehow reach his level.

Watching more of it, Trevor Noah reminds me of the kid hosting Weekend Update who started by talking about what an honor it was. That's-a no good-a.

Yup. Clearly nervous (we've got Kevin Hart tonight to an audience not yet done with cheering the host himself, totally mistimed that) and then way too deferential to Stewart to start. Just get it over with a serious sentence and then a quip and move on.

i watched it last night and i thought the 3min intro where he had to kiss jon stewart's ass and remind us that he was our black stepdad was a bit much and indeed not the best of omens. then he went on and did his best jon stewart impression while the show did its best to be blacker cuz he's black AND international, you know! they had to constantly remind us of that!

i guess this is what happens when a complete unknown takes over for a guy who did a 15yr run, as opposed to jon stewart taking over for a guy who did a 2-3 year run. c'est la vie, no?

Who would be today's equivalent of 1998-99 Jon Stewart, the guy who's had numerous chances but never caught on? Probably not anyone funny.

oh comeon you call this a failure? way ahead of its time! they were always gonna get him in something!

maybe nowadays you'd have to get someone like.... shit, probably some comedian like hannibal burress or aziz ansari? idk if that covers the failure part of the jon stewart equation, but then again the added political emphasis over time made it some kind of a different job than jon stewart walked into. no matter where you are politically once you took over jon stewart's daily show you were going to be seen as a super lefty by a lot of people.

i just hope that the whole I'M BLACK!!!!!! thing can settle down and go away because it gets annoying that you have to be constantly reminded that, gasp, a black guy is hosting a show that was hosted by a white guy! it doesnt even register to me as a big deal but when they keep going out of their way to bring it up like it is a big deal then it's going to end up being a big deal, even if it does that in a chicken and the egg conundrum type way.

it's like CH said with the hearkening of that weekend update anchor who started off gushing about what an honor it is and etc.... it's not a good sign. clearly they're not going to reinvent the wheel here and hey c'est la vie, but i dont need to be reminded that this aint a whitewall tire everywhere i look like you're forcing me to acknowledge it as some giant watershed issue that wouldn't even have registered to me naturally. yeah it would have to some, and i mean the whole "SORRY I'M NOT A WOMAN" part of the opening 3mins was a cringefest (esp if you remember jessica williams' reaction to ppl wanting her to get the gig because she's a female POC and she called that out for being a different type of being token) but overall i just wish the show had the werewithol to do its own thing like it doesnt have to bend over backwards and lick everyone's ass (especially jon stewart's) before it does anything.

so yeah i reckon i'll pop over to see the first 2 segments early on if i remember, but the daily show had long ceased to be appointment tv like it was back when it was launching the careers of the stars it helped create, roughly 98-05 or thereabouts... and then the original first 3-4 year run of colbert was the apex of all that stuff IMO..... and now, well hey like CH said since the show has done its thing and made its cultural impact all that's left to do is just do more since it's prolly done being an important part of the cultural fabric of (lefty?) america.... i just wish it could do its "more" without being so damn "meta" and "PLEASE ACCEPT/LOVE ME!!!!!"

dont the kids sniff out the corporate forced guy in a suit thing? Isnt an organic "trying , but not appearing to try" campaign more appealing to the yutes of today? They seem to have taken the draft kings approach on this one.

Would think something like putting him in some non descript cameos, show up at a game, etc....

I see my nieces favorite show is Bobs Burgers, on you tube on her Phone?...and I dont know if any NEW Bobs Burgers are being made or if it was a 1 year show? but that didnt get the forced treatment.

welp i've given it three viewings this far (and they're proper daily show viewings where i'm trailed off to almost a complete checkout by the time the interview/segment is underway) and thus far one thing i'd have to say i notice is an ostentatious WE BLACK NOW!!!!! push with trevor himself and the correspondent pieces. tonight they had a correspondent piece front and center in the first segment and it was about ARE COPS RACIST?!?!?! with a white correspndent and the new black correspondent and they literally asked ARE ALL COPS RACIST?!?!?! to that bo dietz guy from fox news and did their piece on the two extremes of ALL COPS ARE RACIST / COPS AREN'T RACIST AT ALL!!!! and went into stereotyping a bunch of the talking points that come up when you're talking to #BlackLivesMatter types about the subject/issue of racist cops....

....but yeah, in the end i can say that 2/3 correspondent pieces i've seen are str8up race/racism-related stuff and like, while i get that there's a desire to address the topic of race especially as the daily show gets going with a black host in place of jon stewart and rah rah rah..... MAN, CAN YOU PLEASE JUST GET OVER IT?!!?! you know with larry wilmore on at 1030 when you've got the daily show all about racial stuff then it's like the whole hour is about that, and there comes a point where you wish you could just yell at the TV like WE KNOW! WE'RE COOL WITH IT CUZ WE'RE STILL WATCHING, SO CAN YOU PLZ GET ON WITH THE SHOW?!?!?!

so my hope is going forward even if trevor noah continues doing his best jon stewart impression it isn't permanently caught up in the meta/blackness topic/s that we end up having an hour of racial humor every night @ 10pm on comedy central. and hey i know it's technically a change to the status quo, but do we have to be constantly reminded of it every night til the end of time?

TLDR = thus far trevor noah has a pretty solid jon stewart impression while perpetually/continually reminding us that he's black. at this point i almost wonder if he's trying to convince himself here? but yeah with larry wilmore having 30mins to devote to racial stuff after the show i dont think they need to continue on (pandering?) with a mostly racial-stuff focus night in and night out. let's see if this is just first week transition stuff and it eases up in week 2 and beyond...

you know with all the talk and coverage of subjects that remind you that TREVOR NOAH IS BLACK, you can't help but wonder if they're almost trying to remind him that he's black?

speaking of: do we know what his deal is in regards to whether he actually grew up in america after moving from south africa? or did he move to america AFTER growing up in south-africa/somewhere-abroad?

they love to bring up the south-african stuff too, you know the "expected international perspective" and all that they bring up that others always bring up because it's a question for trevor if whether or not his south african presence will add "international flavor" to the show.... but in the midst of all of that i can't help but wonder how natural his americana is when he hams it up and tries to use ebonics and contemporary vernacular/slang/expressions during the hammery?

you know like, did he essentially/grow-up in america and have his formative teenage years (which have an added emphasis when the guy is, what, 25 y/o tops?) shaped in/by american culture so when he references it and acts a certain way familiar to all of us that grew up in america, is that legit or is that him acting out what others write for him?

i think he'd only be an "international presence" if he grew up in at least england or something and just moved out here 2-3yrs ago and then got hired by TDS and got the gig now....but if he moved out here at age 6 or thereabouts and essentially grew up in american culture that's another thing, and thus it'd make his expected "international flavor" seem forced/token as it'd be akin to saying that the score hired jason goff for middays to give you more of an international flavor cuz you know his family is from BELIZE and all of that, even tho j-goff himself grew up on the mean streets of evanston, tho in fairness i can say that i have technically bought crack in the back of a pace bus in evanston (and the dealer told me he hung around a certain street corner in evanston) so it's not exactly 100% like growing up in naperville or something, you know? there is some "street" there 4sho!

ah well i suppose i could go look it up in an interview or something, but i tried to avoid trevor noah interviews because he'd always start preaching about race or something about how we all need to [whatever] because there is definitely issues with [whatever] in america today and rah rah rah blah blah blah </SJWTalkingPoints>

The state of late night TV talk shows has never been worse. I may never ever watch one again.

A few weeks back Viacom similarly simulcasted the MTV VMAs.
