A second attempt at making the classic Douglas Adams book series into a BBC show. The first was more subtle, more digestible. But I didn't get a chance to follow it on PBS faithfully enough.

Now comes a more mainstream version with Elijah Wood as Gently's sidekick.

It's a trainwreck. Outside of Wood's character, everyone seems to be trying way too hard to be quirky and funny. Even the music is muscling its way into trying to outquirk everything.

It has an interesting premise but there's so much noise in this show, and so much eagerness to be weird and offbeat that it all collapses under its own weight.

I could barely get through the first episode.

Really a shame, because it had a lot of potential.

Maybe it would work better if the lead continually consumed delicious canned beer:

Really wanted to like it, but like Z said it's all over the map.
