he basically did a break down of all the draft picks each of them made, and made the point that they practically picked the same player each pick. defensively, good. offensively, bad.

it was solid. and very true.

He had a ton of them, and they were all pretty much spot-on. It'd be hard to argue that Angelo has been much more successful than Hatley was.

One flaw in Silvy saying they are the same guy. Angelo and his picks got to a Super Bowl!!!!!

Hatley's teams had losing seasons until 2001 when they went 13-3 and got bounced in the 1st round to Philly. Ironically Angelo was hired before that season but Hatley did the draft before that year. So that was a Hatley team.

I don't know that that's very fair. For one, some of Hatley's picks are still here; most importantly, Urlacher. But moreover, Hatley's reign was during a time when the NFC was just beginning to lose its edge to the AFC, whereas Angelo's team from last year had a fairly clear path to the SB.

The Eagles team from 2001 would have easily beaten last years Bears team also. They were the worst SB contender since the 2000 Giants, and probably one of the 5 worst ever. Im not ripping them, I would love for GB to make it, even as one of the worst ever(which could happen this year). Its like being one of the dumbest Mensa members, still an accomplishment.

Urlacher is the only significant guy from the Hatley era. I don't even think Olen Krutz was Hatley. I think he was Rod Graves/Wannie.

Definitely a fair comparison between Hatley and Angelo. But Waddle made a great point about the praise that both of these guys got for later round draft success. The first couple rounds of the draft can be credited to the GM but the late round picks are based almost solely on the analysis of team scouts. With that in mind, I can't say that either of these guys are/were a particularly good GM (or whatever position Hatley was). When the Bears built there team for the 80's their 1st round picks from '79-'86 were Dan Hampton ('79), Otis Wilson ('80), Keith Van Horne ('81), Jim McMahon ('82), Jim Covert ("83), Wilber Marshall ('84), William Perry ('85), Neal Anderson ('86). Now THAT'S how you draft in the first round!

I'll continue the Bears draft classes of first rounders. This info just sticks in my brain.

87 - Jim Haurbaugh

88 - Wendell Davis

89 - Trace Armstrong & Donell Woolford (One of these first rounders came in the Wilber Marshall trade)

90 - Mark Carrier - 10 picks his rookie year

91 - Stan Thomas - That's when the 1st rounders started to go down hill.

92 - Alonzo Spellman

93 - Curtis Conway - Wannie's first pick as coach

94 - John Theiry

95 - Didn't have one. Traded it for Rick Meier

For those that missed it, they were playing Frank Sinatra's (or Dean Martin?) Chicago-my kind of town, and Waddle says "What is this - Silvy's night on the town?", and the Silvy says "and we can play the real estate game".

I've long been a Hatley apologist. He drafted several Pro-Bowlers (including the now retired Tony Parrish). Under Wanny with significant say on the draft picks (prior to '98), NO Bear draft picks were Pro-Bowlers I believe.
