NBC Sports has changed voices for the upcoming Notre Dame football season. Out is Tom Hammond, NBC's principal Notre Dame football voice since 1992, and in his place will be Dan Hicks.
Hicks is NBC's principal voice of the PGA Tour with Johnny Miller, and a key member of the network's Olympic coverage, specifically calling swimming, diving and other high-profile events. He'll succeed the retiring Tim Ryan (the one with glasses) next year on the network's Winter Olympic coverage of alpine skiing in Sochi, Russia.
Hicks is no stranger to calling football, serving as a play-by-play voice of NBC's coverage of the NFL when the network previously held the AFC rights in the early '90s. Hicks also called NBC's NFL Wildcard game in January between the Cincinnati Bengals & Houston Texans. He'll be paired with NFL Network's Mike Mayock & sideline reporter Alex Flanagan on NBC's Notre Dame broadcasts this season. Hicks' first Notre Dame assignment will be the annual Spring Football game that'll be televised Saturday afternoon on NBC Sports Network, DIRECTV 220.
As for Hammond, he'll continue his NBC duties as the principal voice of horse racing's Triple Crown, as well as figure skating & track and field coverage at BOTH the Winter & Summer Olympics.
