Marv Albert has had quite a career as one of sports television's legendary golden voices. Since 2002, Marv has been the signature voice of NBA Basketball on TNT, the New Jersey Nets on the YES Network, and the primary voice of NFL Football on Westwood One calling "Monday Night Football", NFL Playoffs & the Super Bowl on the syndication arm of CBS Radio.

Needless to say, Marv is not getting any younger and the time has come to cut back on his many play-by-play duties. Late this afternoon, it was learned that Marv will no longer call NFL games on Westwood One. Marv, who will turn 69 next Saturday, June 12th, informed Westwood One Vice President & Executive Producer Howard Deneroff, that the time has come to cut back on his workload. Marv's partner on the network's coverage of "MNF" & the Super Bowl, Boomer Esiason, will continue to analyze the games. However, due in part to his own duties as co-host of WFAN SportsRadio's morning show with Craig Carton, Boomer didn't work as many games this past football season.

Deneroff wouldn't say who will replace Marv on Westwood One's national broadcasts this fall. While these names will definitely be considered, Deneroff wouldn't rule out going outside the company to hire their new "MNF" voice. Here are a few notable names:

Kevin Harlan: Like Marv, Kevin calls NBA games on TNT. Kevin is also one of the signature PBP voices on CBS Sports' own NFL & NCAA Basketball coverage. Also filled in for Marv on Westwood One's "MNF" on a few occasions last season.

Wayne Larrivee: Though he's the voice of the Green Bay Packers on radio, Wayne has gotten a number of Westwood One assignments in recent years, whether filling in for Marv on "MNF" or calling NCAA Tournament Basketball games via the NCAA Radio Network.

Dave Sims: Currently the TV voice of the Seattle Mariners on FOX Sports Net Northwest, also Westwood One's "Sunday Night Football" voice.

Ian Eagle: Like Marv, Ian calls the Nets on YES. Like Kevin, Ian calls NFL & NCAA Basketball games on CBS Sports. Also calls "Thursday Night Football" on Westwood One.

I'm sure Marv left his mark on Westwood One just as he did with that hooker.

I know that Gus has a lot on his plate, too. I thought I heard Gus was going to voice one of those upcoming NFL video games, but I'm not sure which one. Gus also calls the Knicks on ESPN Radio in New York, along with NCAA hoops & NFL football on CBS Sports and even Big Ten Basketball on the FOX-owned Big Ten Network.

It looks like it will be Kevin Harlan.

Kevin Harlan has been named the new play-by-play voice of Monday Night Football on Westwood One radio. Harlan replaces TNT colleague Marv Albert, who stepped down from that position earlier this year.

Yes, Kenny is Marv's son. In fact, Marv's got 2 others in the sportscasting family. One of them is Al, who was the PBP of the Denver Nuggets for many years and had been the voice of USA Network's "Tuesday Night Fights" until a few years ago. Steve Albert, I believe called the Golden State Warriors and had been the voice of boxing on Showtime. I don't know what Steve & Al are up to today, but those two and Kenny are definitely related to Marv...

Shit. Too bad Howard David didn't return.
