Meanwhile NFL ratings have continued to climb

Not surprised. Weak defense and everyone chucking up threes ruined the game. LeFlop didn't help either.

“The NBA also canceled games after players boycotted the death of Jacob Blake, a 29-year-old black man who was shot and paralyzed by police, after cops attempted to arrest him for breaking into the home of a woman he allegedly sexually assaulted.”

Hard to garner sympathy for a league that coddles its players to that extent.

Not that I watch NBA much but to one of the points in the article, in Wisconsin last week while waiting for a table they had the Bucks game on in the bar. They were wearing white and blue uniforms and the floor had an enormous blue logo of the state of Wisconsin. The only reason I knew it was the Bucks was the score bug told me so.

Quote:
Lack of Continuity: The NBA has made it hard for casual fans to follow the game in recent years because of added “noise,” as Strauss said. Teams now have several alternate jerseys and court layouts, and teams are not relegated to wearing lighter color jerseys at home anymore — making it hard for fans to tell which team is playing at home or on the road when watching on TV.

viewership is down for the same reason revenue is skyrocketing

there's too many games

maybe in the next CBA and TV deal the RSN bubble bursting will actually force them to address this issue. But most other ideas regarding "ratings" is usually concern trolling for racists

he keeps trying to chase MJ's ghost but he'll never get there. that's why he needs to pad his stats because he thinks that's his only case in the GOAT debate. Charles Barkley pretty shut lebum's mouth last week.

Also, I can't even find an NBA game on TV. Is it on free tv anymore? with so many ppl cord cutting they make it hard to find their games.

I think that they need to address the load management issue. Too many superstars who happen to sit out too many games.
I also think Style of play is an issue too. Too many games which devolve into 3 point shooting contests. It can get pretty ugly to watch when those shots aren't falling.

It's the same problem baseball has. Winning basketball is cookie cutter sabremetrics basketball. Just not as pronounced and ugly. And basketball is so much easier to fix if it gets to the point of fans holding their noses. Baseball is like the genie is out of the bottle and no tinkering will resuscitate it. It needs an overhaul. basketball you just basically fuck with the court and it improves whatever their goal is.

Just spitballing, but it may help if the home team’s games were easy to watch in the third largest media market.

I know the whole politics thing made some people stop watching, but I think in 2024 it is basically this universal of sports

Tier 1 NFL, College Football

Big Drop
College Basketball/March Madness

Drop
NBA playoffs

Drop
MLB playoffs

Drop
NBA regular season/MLB regular season

Drop
Hockey

The success of The Last Dance does indicate that there is still an appetite for the NBA, just maybe not this NBA

Yep. There's an appetite for basketball. It's a great sport. It's not as compelling as it once was. It's probably because of all the chucking. Curry's greatness might have fucked things up.

I have a huge appetite for the old NBA. This is just NBA2K in real life. Hate it and can't sit through a whole game. Was watching the Bulls play in game with a Gen Z kid and he just sat on his phone the whole game, picking his head up when something big happened and then returning his attention back to his phone. Felt like I was watching the game by myself and never had him over to watch another game.

The new generation is only looking for the ESPN highlights so they can post about it on social media. Sad world we live in.

The NFL is a television program that is broadcast during the worst weather season of the year. People plan their day around their couch. The other sports are sports first with television as an afterthought.

I wonder what the spin will be when the NFL on Netflix crushes the NBA games in ratings

Wouldn't it be 'more people like football'? Or are you seriously wondering because you're an idiot

I have a feeling that decision was mutual (or court ordered)

This board has posters who insist the NBA is more popular despite all evidence pointing out how wrong they consistently are.

This board has one person who insists that, and he's a moron.

This is like using "people on twitter" to make a point.

Fair point, and yes he is a moron.

Yep. The discussion was never about whether basketball was more popular than football until idiots on here kept beating the drums about whether basketball was more popular than football. Something which was never relevant to the discussion.

Maybe one day it will be legal to bet on basketball.
