If it seems like the rich are getting richer, that's what it appears with this story. ESPN, which has broadcasted MLB since 1990, will continue to be one of the sport's broadcast partners for quite sometime. The Bristol, CT-based "Worldwide Leader in Sports" has announced a new 8-year extension that'll keep MLB on both ESPN & ESPN Radio nationally until 2021 at a cost of $5.6 Billion.

Among the notables of the new MLB/ESPN Extension:

*Up to 90 Regular Season Games Broadcast on ESPN & ESPN2
*All 30 Teams Will Be on ESPN At Least Once
*Holiday Games on Memorial Day, Independence Day & Labor Day Return to ESPN
*1 MLB Wildcard Game-First Since 2007 on ESPN (Alternating Leagues)
*ESPN/ESPN2 Airs Games on Monday, Wednesday & Exclusive "Sunday Night Baseball"

...with 65% of them featuring some combination of the Yankees, Red Sox, or Cardinals.

I hope not. Then again, The SCORE's Matt Rodewald has suggested more Yankees/Red Sox games as a result of ESPN's new MLB deal.

Understand the Yankees and Red Sox fatigue, but I don't think the Cards get any more coverage than any of the other contending teams.

EVERY team is supposed to be on at least once, and that's supposed to include bottom feeders such as the Blue Jays, Royals, Twins, Rockies, Astros & Marlins. If ESPN commentators can't say anything nice about those last place teams, don't say anything at all...

The most important part of this story is that the teams now receive an incremental $11M per year vs. the last contract.

That will start to even out as player salaries go up, but teams that have locked in young talent for multi-year contracts will benefit significantly from this deal.
