He wil still say something stupid a year from now and get canned.

That's unbelievable. Probably could have had him for half that much.

That number just seems unbelievable. His agent did a hell of a job.

Here's a list of the hightest paid sports broadcasters.

http://www.therichest.com/sports/baseball-sports/sports-commentators/who-are-the-highest-paid-sports-commentators-in-the-world/?view=all

Steven A Smith joins that club. But I think that contract is for his TV show and his NY radio show on ESPN radio. It's combined since it's the same company with 2 different jobs. So he works more than these other guys on the list. Like Al Michaels just does 18 or 19 games a year for his 5 million.

I still can't believe that Jim Rome leads everybody by a lot with 30 million. That's amazing.

i remember hanging out at the TGI Fridays @ penn station in manhattan and talking to a guy who saw stephen A give a speech to some journalism students at a (black?) college somewhere. he said that stephen A did his speech and then had a Q&A session. when he got asked questions like if he had any advice on how to make it big like him, stephen A would cackle and be like "man if you gotta ask me for advice on how to make it then you ain't ever gonna make it" --- by and large he was dickish and standoffish as if to challenge the kids to rise up and get on his level by making fun of their feeble questions on how to be a success like him. "you don't need me to tell you anything; go out and do it your own damn self!" was the mantra of his advice to the kids, which evidently was met with a whole lot of "man fuck that guy!" from the people in attendance, but this guy could see that stephen A was trying to challenge them as opposed to coddle them with soullessly hollow answers about believing in yourself and trying hard and putting out max effort and being persistent and etc etc.

and of course it didnt hurt that stephen A's attitude kind of props up his whole schtick/persona/etc of being an in/famous egotist who spews a lot of hot air, because that's what he certainly did that evening. love him or hate him stephen A pulled off becoming a nationally-recognized brand name, cuz shit even as i type this he's always "stephen A" as opposed to just "steven" or something.

that said, i'm sure we could have a fairly/spirited debate on whether or not stephen A is a good thing for black people and/or the future of (black?) sports journalism, seeing as everyone knows he's all about buddying up to the players and starfucking as much as possible to be able to namedrop his exploits hanging out with NBA players and whatnot. but one thing you have to give the guy is that his whole thing ended working out really well for him, even if it took a few tries with failures like "quite frankly" to end up where he is now.

Smith has a gift to make any Sports subject sound as serious as Cancer. I can take him in small doses.

He no longer has an ESPN radio show. He's been on satellite radio for about a year.

Edit: I love Costas and just about every guy on that list makes sense except Rome.

How is this hack worth $3.5 million to ESPN? Unreal.

Something is wrong with that list. Seems quite a few missing between Don Cherry's 800k and Al Michaels. I find it hard to believe that Aikman, Collinsworth and the like of top ex players do that shit for less than $1M.

so rome's salary is more than the entire yearly ad revenue brought in by the #1 sports talker in the #3 market? how can #2 be $5.5 and then jump to $30M for #1.... seems like a shitty list

Ehhh....that's sorta like saying that Stern is the highest paid newscaster.
It's a different category, IMO.

Sitting and talking about sports on the radio/podcatsts is not the same as what Michaels, Nance, etc, are doing.
