So I was correct! when Angelo paid Earl a couple of years ago because they had money left v The Cap, today they released Earl (Asked him to renegotiate first) and no cap hit! Saving $2.5M for another mid level player that the team he leaves from says he cant play. 8)

Melton Money?????

the Bennett contract was crazy to begin with... he had 3-4 good games and they gave him a bunch of cap leftovers with 8-9 Mil guaranteed if i remember right. they must really be banking on Wilson (preferably) or Hixon to serve as a #3 WR...

Weems needs to be cut as well now unless they restructure to near the league minimum. Weems showed nothing as a returner in limited duty last year.

On an unrelated topic, WTF are they bringing Idonje back for? I hope that is near the league minimum too and that nothing is guarenteed, preferably a rookie would win Idonje's spot at backup DE.

They told Weems to take a pay cut or they are releasing him.

Bennett contract was a bad decision. But when you can't draft WR's, that's what happens.

No football contract is really a bad decision. Not when you can cut a guy at will.

With pretty much zero production? I'd say it was a bad decision.

It's not like they didnt sign someone because of his deal. If they didnt pay him they would have paid someone else, you cant carry over the money til next season.

Except they took a guy in the second round who is now a legit receiver. Generally you're right, but they just made one of their best all time picks in Alshon. Great value.

He's very easily replaceable. Wilson or Hixon would have to be just awful for it to affect the offense. When your top 2 are this good, you shouldn't really have to worry about your 3, 4, and 5.

Bennett was Angelo. But Emery is basically the same guy so I see your point.

Bennett had a great run about 3 years ago. he was the only guy catching the ball and was always going over the middle. Angelo had room in the salary cap during that current year and used that space to sign Bennett.

At the same time, Bennett gets a big bonus money, which he should always take, but I think if that money was cap money this year, he still has a gig.

Right now there have to be at least 30 WR FA's or more that could stepup in Bennets role. When the Bears signed him to that much,I thought they were nuts.

Bennett couldn't stay healthy but he was tough as nails.

I appreciate Earl's contributions but not only could he not stay healthy it sure seemed like he dropped too many passes the past couple of years. He was the #3 WR last year but in reality he was the #5 target on almost any play he was in. Hixon is no slouch and can cover that role.

As others have said, let's see what they have in Wilson and try to find another guy who can be a #5 WR who plays special teams

The guy was a good player but is relatively easy to replace with equal value.

THE EARL OF BENNETT.

man, IIRC the most memorable thing about him is when he was catching those fines from the NFL for wearing those all-orange shoes... and wasn't it cutler and/or roy will (if not brandon marshall) who insisted on paying the fines for earl so he could keep on styling?

i think he quit when it was costing upwards of $50k/game for him to wear the cleats. there comes a point where sheer and utter capitalism wins out over principle, and it's usually the point where you can buy a fully loaded peasantmobile sedan with all of the bells and whistles (~50k).

so this one's for you, earl! may god have mercy on your soul as you realize that even with justin blackmon potentially out for the year you're not even fit to carry cecil's shorts for the 3rd time down in jacksonville.....

...but hey you could always go to seattle and prolly be just about the best WR they've got going. that's how important your position is in today's NFL, ask greg jennings when you stop by your local gas station's carwash and he offers to dry off your car for $2.

btw, if he can stay healthy enough to remain on the field for, say, ~14+ games this season--- that hakeem nicks to IND signing could very well be "a thing."

andrew luck isn't getting any worse and if he's intact and out there on that field hakeem nicks can be the goods.

also even if we're overpaying for the twilight of his career i'm so damn glad we got brandon marshall so we don't have to fuck with this list all that much. getting him just made everything that much easier, cuz then you can draft alshon and give him a year to develop with an actual role model on the field and i think his second year return was enough !!! to say "holy shit what's this team masquerading as the bears with actual wide receivers?"

ah well, i'm still convinced that i'm gonna wake up tomorrow and shane matthews will be winging it to marty booker and/or the ghost of marcus robinson and we find out the last ~13-14 years were all a dream that i cooked up one night when i was knocked unconscious during a robbery because i fell asleep on the L.

one more btw.... idk the bears' cap situation, but if you could get them for dirt cheap i might be prone to kick the tires on mild autism (see what he's got left cuz he used to be the #1 guy in dallas) and robert meachem (even tho he fell off of a cliff in SD, he was used to being the #3 or #4 guy in NO under the man they call breesus, so maybe he could adapt to being the 3rd/4th guy here in the tresticle offense. again only if it's dirt cheap cuz idk what they have in marquess wilson but i wouldn't mind a flier on a guy who at best could give you like 45 catches 600 yds and 7TD and worst is a 1-2mil cap hit)
