The Chicago Bears are adding a twist to their offseason quarterback competition, signing former Notre Dame standout Jimmy Clausen to the roster on Thursday.
The addition, first announced by a tweet from Clausen’s quarterbacks coach Steve Clarkson and confirmed to the Tribune by Clausen, registers as a bit of a surprise as the Bears finish up their second week of organized team activities with ongoing hopes of solidifying a backup plan behind starting quarterback Jay Cutler.
Jordan Palmer entered OTAs as the team’s No. 2 quarterback with competition coming from sixth-round draft pick David Fales as well as Jerrod Johnson.
Both general manager Phil Emery and coach Marc Trestman have expressed confidence in Palmer’s aptitude and ability, convinced he has enough to win the No. 2 job. There are also high hopes for the possibility of Fales developing into a reliable back-up option for the long term.
But now, apparently, the Bears want to do a little more evaluation at the position and will take a look at Clausen, a former second-round draft choice who never could get his NFL career off the ground with the Carolina Panthers.
Clausen told the Tribune on Thursday that Trestman ran his pro day at Notre Dame in 2010. The renowned quarterback guru also mentored Clausen some throughout the predraft process that year.Clausen said he plans to spend this weekend performing a cram session on the Bears' playbook and didn't quite know yet whether he's being considered as a possible No. 2 option.
"I am blessed to have an opportunity to come here and work with a great coaching staff and help the team at any level I can," he said.
Clausen played in 13 games and made 10 starts as a rookie in 2010. But he completed only 52.5 percent of his passes, averaged 145.2 passing yards per start and had three times as many interceptions (nine) as TD passes (three). The next spring, the Panthers drafted Cam Newton with the No. 1 pick and Clausen hasn’t taken a regular season snap since.
Clausen. 26, played in four preseason games last season for Carolina but suffered a torn labrum in his shoulder right in the preseason finale and was then waived. He wasn’t picked up by any of the other 31 NFL teams and spent the 2013 regular season on Injured Reserve for the Panthers. His four-year rookie contract expired in March.
To make room on the roster for Clausen, the Bears waived linebacker Lawrence Wilson on Thursday.
