Projected 5th overall from Matt Miller -

The Pick: S Derwin James, FSU

Derwin James might be the best player in the country next season, but as we just saw with Jamal Adams and as we saw the year before with former Seminole Jalen Ramsey, defensive backs are rarely drafted in the top few picks. Instead, teams like the Chicago Bears can get a massive playmaker with pick No. 5.

James is a versatile safety, similar in many ways to Adams, and has the size and speed to be a ball hawk in the box or over the top of a defense. James did tear his MCL in Week 2 of the 2016 season, so there's a possibility he's not back to 100 percent this fall, but after taking a medical redshirt he does have three seasons of eligibility left. James isn't a lock to enter the 2018 draft.

The Bears missed out on the chance to draft Budda Baker or Marcus Maye when they traded back in Round 2. Grabbing James would fill the largest remaining hole on the roster.

This one is over.

Do the work. It's how you find the next Adam Shaheen.

in round 5 does the mock have them taking a 5'3" rb from division III who can jump on a trampoline and catch 2 passes 3 times in a row all while doing consecutive backflips?

Pace's first pick next year will be someone playing at Joliet Junior college.

Yeah....the Bears are projected to have a Top 5 pick in the Draft....so really you gotta look at scouting reports for guys ranked 25-40. And make sure you spend three picks to get that guy too.

Maybe they should trade a first round pick for Sam Bradford.

Without a running game to support him, Bradford had a 99.3 Passer Rating, completed 71% of passes and threw 20 TD to 5 INT. He also didn't have many receiving weapons.

Bradford did just fine. Worth the pick. Injuries prevented a playoff appearance.

I think WR is going to emerge as the greatest need.

Next year is going to be a good QB class and we will look foolish for moving up this year.

Seriously. Bradford did just enough to lose.

I've mentioned it in another thread, if Darnold keeps his stock high (this is no given) and the Bears are picking 1.1 they absolutely must draft him. It doesn't matter what (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky looks like or what other needs there are. No matter what they draft Darnold with the intention of trading (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky (they'll get two firsts for him because the NFL is nonsense) or trading Darnold for an unprecedented return.

The rest of the QB prospects in really don't look all that great, at least to me no better than Watson was coming into this year's draft. But that can change, and if it does the Bears should apply the same strategy to them as well. The QB position is unsolved until somebody plays at a Pro Bowl level.

If Pace is still GM, look for the lowest rated senior WR playing in a Sun Belt Conference school.

Since the Bears will likely have the #1 pick, I could definitely see Pace trading at least three picks to another team to move down to take a third rated safety on the board.
