Don't have a name, but I can offer a couple of criteria:

1. Keep the current overall scheme and playbook
2. Find somebody who can approximate the Fangio's ability to author a game plan and adjust to how opponents are attacking it during a game.

Yeah, I know, it's a "Captain Obvious" answer, but several of the names already mentioned in this thread don't match either. And some of the best DCs/HCs in the Bears past have been lacking in both categories....

Maybe Donatell is the answer

This is actually one of my issues with Fangio. He doesn't really do this. He is more of a mon.-sat. coach in that he is great with preparing his guys to play, but doesn't seem to do a whole lot of in game scheming on the fly. Lovie was of the same mold, great prep guy during the week.. but you knew what he was going to run.

I'm not buying it. He's a straight forward kind of cat (for the most part). If he didn't want anything to do with these jobs, we wouldn't hear anything about it because everyone would already know not to bother.



So.. his even taking interviews tells all you need to know. He's being coy in that he has already worked things out via other channels (ie his agent and so on)

These would be my picks from this article..



1. Ed Donatell

Bears defensive backs coach Ed Donatell would likely be the in-house favorite, although if Fangio leaves to another team, he could try and bring Donatell with him. He's coached under Fangio for each of the last eight seasons dating back to their time together with the San Francisco 49ers. Donatell was also previously the defensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers and Atlanta Falcons for six years in the early 2000s.

His experience and familiarity with the scheme could make him a natural successor to Fangio in Chicago, and he deserves a lot of credit for the work he's done with the Bears secondary over the last four seasons.


2. Todd Bowles

If Matt Nagy wants to opt for a more experienced Vic Fangio replacement, Todd Bowles could fit the bill. He was the head coach of the New York Jets for the last four seasons, a job he earned after two strong seasons as Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator from 2013-2014. Bowles is expected to be a hot commodity on the defensive coordinator market, especially with his former head coach Bruce Arians potentially available once again.

The timing might not work out if and when Fangio would be hired away, but Bowles could be the veteran coordinator that pairs well with the young Bears head coach.


3. Mike Caldwell

Mike Caldwell actually played linebacker for the Chicago Bears back in 2002, and it turns out he's well connected to head coach Matt Nagy. The two of them both started with the Philadelphia Eagles back in 2008, working their way up from quality control coaches on opposite sides of the ball. They both left the team when Andy Reid was hired by the Chiefs in 2013, but Caldwell didn't follow them to Kansas City, instead taking a job as linebackers coach for the Arizona Cardinals. Since then, he took the same position and added the assistant head coach title with the New York Jets under Todd Bowles.

If he and Nagy maintained a strong relationship from their days together in Philadelphia, he could be a younger, under the radar option to step in for the Bears.


4. Jay Rodgers

Jay Rodgers might be the Bears' most overlooked position coach. He's younger and a little less experienced than some of their other assistants, but he's done a tremendous job with the defensive line in Chicago that does so much of the dirty work. Rodgers helped coach Akiem Hicks to Pro Bowl status while developing Eddie Goldman into one of the league's top young nose tackles. Just this season alone, he helped mold rookie fifth-round pick Bilal Nichols into essentially a starter as their top defensive end opposite Hicks. Rodgers also has experience working with the other side of the ball, coaching quarterbacks and wide receivers at various college programs before coming to the NFL and switching to the defensive line.

His wide range of background could offer some different perspectives to the defensive coordinator position, if he's ready to step into the larger role.

They have a ton of offensive talent even with Jackson probably leaving via FA. Evans and Godwin are an awesome WR duo who are great down field targets. Winston has a ton of flaws but is great throwing downfield. Arians specializes in a down field passing attack.

12-4 might be an exaggeration but they could be really good next year.
