with Cohen out, who is next up.

Is there any reason Patterson couldn't handle all returns?

I'd rather see him do that than cover their own punts, which he inexplicably does.

maybe sign my guy Kerrith Whyte from the Lions practice squad. He was a great special teams player and very fast. He knows some of the system so could cover some of that Cohen role

patterson should be the choice here unless he is exceptional in his current punt team role.

Put Mitch in there. Easy enough job that even he could handle: run forward.

Ex-RAIDER. Good special teams guy in his day.

He's the anti-Patterson.

Quote:
A lot of people don’t know if the punt team bats the ball before it goes into the end zone, if we pick it up and we try to run with it and fumble, we still get the ball back,” Harris said on Dec. 3. “No one knows that rule. … It’s always been like that (laughs). A lot of people just don’t know that rule. A lot of people see me every time go and get the ball if they touch it. They’re like, ‘Why are you trying to get the ball?’ Because of that rule. … It helps to know the rules."

Quote:
Harris’ general know-how proved useful on Dec. 2, too. He allowed a Kansas City Chiefs kickoff to bounce toward the end zone, hoping it’d land out of bounds. It didn’t. As the kickoff coverage team approached, Harris stepped out of bounds and touched the ball.

Because the ball was first touched out of bounds, the kickoff was illegal.

The Raiders thus took possession at their own 40-yard line

Based on the above quotes, it sounds like he knows more about football than Nagy does. Make him head coach, too.

Smart of him to know the rule, but that sounds like an asinine rule.

Returning punts is an extremely hazardous profession. Mooney and Jackson are likely the two most talented punt return guys on the roster, but really cannot risk losing starters returning punts, likely the same goes for Patterson.

How hard is it to call fair catch and catch the ball. I don't care if we gain yardage because of the returner at this point. Just don't lose us yardage.

A few years back thru I think like 12 weeks, the Packers had negative punt return yardage. It was amazingly bad.

didnt tarik cohen fair catch a ball at the 4 earlier this year? you put your heels on the 10 and if the ball is going behind you, pretend you are catching it at the 15 and let the ball bounce where it bounces

Kind of why good punt return guys are rare, do you want to try to run up and catch the ball in traffic and risk, and I love this term "muff" the punt. Do you have the intestinal fortitude to forego the fair catch and hope you can avoid the fringe roster gunner who only stays in the NFL if he takes your head off, or do you, as Ginn has done all season, make a business decision and just let the ball hit the ground while running the other direction?

That was the rule for decades. Seemed stupid when it was discarded.

Has it been discarded? Reminds me of the coin-toss deferral. For basically the entirety of the league's existence up until a couple years ago, the team that won the toss took the ball. Funny how all of a sudden every team defers now.
