I imagine his issue would be that hiring Flores over the guy who has turned the Lions into one of the most feared offenses in the NFL and the former HC who has actually lead his teams to the playoffs is a blatant DEI move by George and Kevin Warren, and it'd be really hard to argue with him about it. Of course fretting over not hiring Ben Johnson would kind of undo his logic about hating Caleb Williams and his prospects as an NFL talent, but I'm sure he could manage his way through that sticky wicket.

I am on record as wanting Ben Johnson, but I think it is pretty likely he wants nothing to do with the Bears. So then you have no argument. They cannot hire a guy that does not want to come. Flores to me is an intriguing option. I would much rather go with him than have someone like Kingsbury.

I mean the DEI alone Brian Flores would be peak Bears. But in terms of getting a guy desperate enough to take any job who has a modicum of success elsewhere he’s probably as good as you’re going to get. The only way you see a quality candidate is if you give him the type of authority Bill Belichick enjoyed, or at least something like Kyle Shanahan has now.

That’s the real problem with it. It would just be a sign that they haven’t changed at all organizationally and are just looking for another weirdo yes-man who will take the fall when it all goes to shit.

Do we know Ben Johnson will be expensive? If I’m Ben Johnson I look at playing another eight or so years with Joe Burrow collecting a head coach salary as a pretty safe bet. Might even get a Super Bowl ring in there. Then Joe Burrow hangs them up, you get to pick the new guy and no matter how that goes good or bad you will be a hot commodity coaching hire in a decade’s time.

Or you go to Chicago, oversee a complete shitshow trainwreck, have your name tarnished and go running with your tail between your legs back to Daddy Dan Campbell (just like Matt Nagy had to). Yeah you made head coach salary for two or three years but you’re radioactive now.

Monken likely comes in and at least gives you an identity on offense, but he will not bring the Ravens player personnel department with him, so you would see a bunch of marginal NFL offensive players trying to execute his offense. He also has to rebuild a terrible defense.

Ben Johnson cannot bring Gibbs and the Lions offensive line with him, so again you get marginal NFL players and rookies trying to execute his offense, and will face the same problem rebuilding the defense.

McCarthy makes sense as he could get you to basic competence.
