That draft was a Mark Hatley production.

I'm not sure. I think there was some talk that Hatley wanted Plaxico, but that was eight years ago, so I may be misremembering. Actually, the Bears were ridiculed for taking a gimmicky player with no real position from a small school with their first round pick. That was one of the few picks Hatley got right.

Yeah they were targeting Plax I think he had a decent career I just looked at his #s not as good as I thought but good.

Avg 59 catches 923 yds and 6 TDs per season going into this year

6 Postseason Tds in 12 games and a ring.

Yeah, he wasn't a bad receiver. Just disappointing for a top-10 pick. That "and a ring" is going to do a lot for his reputation as a receiver in the future... more than some of the other stats.

Exactly, see Lynn Swann...his average #s weren't much better than Devin Hester's were this year.

54 overall but its not a huge gap between the 2

Urlacher is a possible hall of fame candidate. Plaxico, even before his recent troubles, would never sniff the HOF.

Possible? Not first ballot yet, but Im pretty sure Urlacher will be in the HOF. Plax is a good WR that had a few great moments last season but the gap is pretty wide between the two. Urlacher has been much better at his position.

What has Urlacher done to deserve the HoF?

6 time pro bowler
4 time 1st team all pro
AP Defensive Rookie of the year
AP Defensive Player of the year
...plus at one point he was one of the most popular players in the league.

That's not too bad, better than Andre Tippet.

Does Ray Lewis belong in the HoF?

Since I'm leaving work soon, I will answer my own question about Ray Lewis and make my point about Urlacher.

The obivous answer for Lewis is "Yes, Ray Lewis will be in the Hall of Fame". The man did too much on the best defense of the last decade to not get in, including a Super Bowl ring.

However, Urlacher needs to win a ring in order to be voted into the Hall, IMO. I don't really think AP awards like Defensive Rookie are any indication of future HoF status, but certainly look good on a resume. I would even go so far as saying a Super Bowl MVP Award doesn't immediately get you into the HoF (see Deion Branch).

So if Ray Lewis had not won a ring, he would not be a HOFer?

Ray Lewis has matched OJ's murder count so I think he is a Hall of Famer. No other NFL player can match those numbers.

I think "Super Bowl rings won" is the silliest indicator of HOF worthiness there is, especially for non-QBs. Urlacher was the best player at his position for half a decade, redefined the role of the MLB in regards to the ascendant Tampa-2 defense of the mid-2000s, and has the awards and plaudits to back all that up. If he's not in already, another year or two of solid play and he will be.

I agree with IB. I dont see how he cant be in. Aside from Ray Lewis I think he has been the best defensive player in the league in the past decade or so. Hes got the awards and credentials to get in, and a SB ring is never really considered a HOF credential, although it would surely improve a borderline players chances to get in. I dont consider Urlacher a borderline HOFer though.

A snip from http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/footba ... _bears_ap/

Quote:
Unlike last year, when they HAD to draft a quarterback, the Bears had three players they wanted -- Urlacher, receiver Plaxico Burress and running back Thomas Jones -- and planned to take whoever was available. They talked to Baltimore and Philadelphia about moving up to make sure they got one of the three, but both teams wanted too much, said Mark Hatley, vice president of player personnel.

Besides, Hatley said, he was confident at least one of the three would still be there at No. 9. When the Baltimore Ravens took Tennessee running back Jamal Lewis with the fifth pick, Hatley said he knew something would work out.

Chicago almost got its choice of two of the three. After the Arizona Cardinals took Jones with the seventh pick, the Pittsburgh Steelers took almost their entire 15 minutes to choose between Burress and Marshall quarterback Chad Pennington. They finally took Burress.

"It would have been a tough pick if both were there. We liked both the players," Hatley said. "We're excited about Brian. He's got a bright future in the NFL. We feel like he's got a chance to be a big impact player for us."

It sounds like Plexiglass was the first choice. I am glad it ended up being Urlacher.

Urlacher is completely borderline. Just because he is one of the most popular players in the league doesn't mean that he is automatically inducted into the hall.

I agree. I don't think he is a HoF player right now. In some ways I think saying he is borderline my be because of hype. He was a great player but I don't think he is a HoF player at this time.

I think one area he's going to have trouble in is that he's not a stats compiler. Besides from tackles, he doesn't usually lead the league in sacks or INTs or anything like that.

I wouldn't bet the house that he'd get in if he retired tomorrow. But if he has another two years of prodution basically like this year, and maybe one more pro bowl, I think he's safe.
