They traded their 2nd round pick for a 3rd and 4th round pick.

I hate this trade.

William Moore(S) and Mohamed Massaquo(WR)
William Moore was one of the top ranked Safeties in the draft!! Although he did have a injury, but a top 10 pick if he didnt get hurt? worth the risk?
Mohamed Massaquo I don't know much about him, but why didn't they take him?

What could they get in the 3rd and 4th round that won't be "Earl Bennetts"?

is anyone as angry as I am about this trade?

P.S

Browns took Massaquo with the 50th pick.
Falcons took Moore with the 55th pick.

I think they have more needs than they have picks so it made sense to trade down to get that extra pick.

Is there someone you really wanted at pick 49? I think it is a solid move, now they have 2 3rd round picks, and 2 4th round picks.

That's where Angelo works his magick. BTW, Seattle got that pick.

Even before the Jay Cutler trade with the Denver Broncos, Jerry Angelo has tended to swing & miss more times than he'd like in the first and second rounds of the NFL Draft since he started generally managing the Chicago Bears. I saw something today that 5 of the last 8 top draft picks in these 2 rounds are NO LONGER on the Bears' roster. Angelo tends to do much better as the draft goes into the later rounds, and something tells me, we won't know until tomorrow before we see if Angelo can find guys who can play on Sunday afternoons as soon as this season.

There were more than a few people thinking that Massaquoi would be the only decent WR left at around 49, and I would have been just fine with that pick.

Now what do you do to fill that massive fucking hole? Your now going to target 'character players'. Maybe they are hidden gems, maybe not. At least with Massaquoi, you knew what you were getting. A big (6'2" 210lbs), physical WR, who is plenty elusive despite that, runs good routes, soft hands, and has a well above average vertical. The only knock was drops, earlier in his college career, and lack of 'special' speed.

I would have gladly taken Moore too...maybe even over the WR. The kid is kind of a freak. A 4.45 40, at 221lbs. Injuries were minor.

I think its a terrible move, because all that depth at the two positions we needed is gone for the most part. Because the draft went somewhat differently than most perceived.

Angelo said it himself, that they needed to land another gem, and it sounded like he thought the Boldin trade would get done. Now what?

Hawkeye Vince hit the nail on the head.

I also think Angelo got hosed by the Raiders. Angelo was gonna draft the safety the guys on ESPN were making fun of Al Davis most of the night. "He would have been there on Sunday, hell, he would have been there on Monday."

I look at it this way, Angelo has whiffed on more second rounders than 3rd and 4th rounders. He now has an early third round pick, and an early fourth round pick.

Let's not beat Angelo up too bad until we see who he drafts, and we have a few years to evaluate. To me this draft lacked sizzle and I was ELATED when he dealt for Cutler.

The Bears really need to draft a WR, free safety or a big physical cornerback, a DE, and a OT/OG. Then I'm sure they'll take another DT and OLB along the way.

The key positions are: WR, FS, DE and OT - so let's see what Angelo does on Sunday, and give these guys some time to develop.

Also keep in mind that all these teams that drafted a WR in Rounds 1 and 2, are more than likely going to cut a WR now. So there will be plenty of journeyman WRs out there for the taking - on the cheap.

I trust Angelo more with 4th round picks than 1st and 2nd rounders... That's not a ringing endorsement, but let's see him work his magic.

I'm with you. The fact is the Bears need a receiver, but they also need a number of other things just about as badly. And the fact is, most of Angelo's good picks have been in later rounds.

I went to a dinner recently where the guest host was Kevin Butler. Someone asked him about the Cutler deal, and he said one of the things he thought was great about the deal was that the Bears wouldn't draft in the first round until the new collective bargaining agreement ended the current insanity. I agree totally. First round picks are bad value on the balance, IMO; the risk/reward is still probably greater in later rounds, unless you truly think you're getting a dynamic player. The second round doesn't carry the same amount of risk as the first does, but it's sort of a gradient, IMO. Jerry now has a ton of picks in the back-end of the draft, and that's good because he generally does well there, and the Bears have a ton of holes to fill.

I suppose it's a bad thing that Jerry doesn't draft well in the early rounds. But, you might as well focus on the things you do well, so....

That's the exact argument and opinion I have. We need some guys that arnt total question marks.

With the aging offensive line and defense, I was hoping we would get a WR and SS that could fill the holes and maybe... give the Bears the chance of getting back into the playoffs, one last time before the offensive line and defense start collecting social security!!

I also just looked at a draft pick value chart and by sending the #49 (worth 410 pts) to Seattle for #68 (250 pts) and #105 (84 pts)... We just lost out on 76 points!!

I guess I should want depth and future starters to develop out of the draft than guys that can start and help "today". Maybe i'm just bitter over Earl Bennett's of the world.

Let's pray we can pickup something decent in post draft free agency.

Anyways, perhaps I'll feel better about the trade tomorrow when we see what we get for Christmas.

I don't understand Angelo's philosophy. Most teams like to stockpile 1st, 2nd and 3rd rounders. Jerry goes for a bunch of 6th and 7th rounders.

I think he is buying into the mentality that first round picks are actually detrimental to the team in terms of cap space (why would I pay a lot of money to an unproven commodity...as about 40% wash out). Additionally I guess he didn't love anyone in the second round at his spot and saw more potential in having more picks later.

You stock those pre-draft. You don't see teams bundling all their lower picks for an extra second rounder on draft day, and for good reason. Most teams do stockpile lower round picks, or at least try to stockpile them. That's why every talking head on TV yesterday spent half his airtime explaining why Team X has to trade down. They go overboard about it, but the point is sound.
That's the exact argument and opinion I have. We need some guys that arnt total question marks.
Pick 49 is hardly a sure thing. The kid from Georgia was, what, the seventh WR off the board? He isn't a total question mark?

The defense is still quite young outside of Urlacher and the Ogunleye, and the latter needs to be replaced anyway. Your left tackle is going to be one year removed from the draft, one of your guards is only a couple of years removed from the draft, and there will be interior O-line picks in the later rounds, which is where most guards and centers go. I don't think there's a huge window next year anyway, but to the extent there is, it's not closing after 2009. In fact, with a young QB, RB, revamped O-line, and most defensive players still on the right side of 30, its probably just opening.

This team isn't in a position where they should start mortgaging the future to the present, especially insofar as they already lost a significant chip for the future in the 2010 1st rounder. In a perfect world you get a guy who can step in right away and is productive for a long time, but if I had to chose one extreme- tremendous one year wonder, or guy who sits on the bench for a year and does nothing but has a nice career- I'd take the latter, especially for this team. Besides, third rounders step in and produce immediately all the time; while you bring up Earl Bennett, Marcus Harrison played pretty well at DT last year, and he was also a third rounder.

Beardown likes to say that everyone likes to play Mel Kiper on draft day and pretend they know everything about all these players based on that game they say last year on that Thursday night nothing else was on. I'm sure I'm guilty of that as well, but even Mel Kiper has a pretty bad track record at evaluating these guys. The average fan has an ever worse track record than that. We'll know whether the draft was good or bad when we see the product on the field; until then, Angelo has drafted well enough over his career that I'm usually inclined to give his picks the benefit of the doubt.

You didn't get no players through three rounds. You got Jay Cutler "in round one." And they have two picks in the third round.

I didn't like this at first. They pick 4th in the third round and there are still 4-5 good players. I really would liked them to have drafted Phil Loadholt. I'm hoping Rashard Johnson is still there. This could work out okay.

Overall I agree with you, but I find it hard to believe that the quality of a pick at 49 is that much greater than the 2 picks in the 3rd round, which is why I find it amazing that some are upset with Angelo for trading down. But in reality he is in a no win situation. If he stays put some will bitch that he does that, if he trades down some bitch about that too.

I am glad they have 4 picks now in the 3rd and 4th round because it will help us address some of the holes on this roster, and I will hold judgment until we see who he picks and how they play.

What do you guys think about trade their 2nd and maybe a 5th for a 1st next year, there is much more value in that 1st rounder next year than the 3rd and 4th we got...

Why would any team ever give up a 1st next year for the 49th pick and a 5th rounder?

That's actually not true. (well the first part at least).

Most successful NFL teams do NOT want to draft at the top of the first round, as it means two things:

A) They sucked dick the previous year
B) They're going to be forced to pay some unproven player a shitload of guaranteed money

New England has done an incredible job of stockpiling 2nd, 3rd and 4th round picks over the years and striking paydirt. Look at how many 2nd rounders they had this year: http://www.drafthistory.com/teams/patriots.html Less guaranteed money than a first rounder, and usually they play with a chip on their shoulder.

I have NO idea why Angelo struggles so much with 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks, but these are the types of things that financially cripple teams and tie their hands years later. Detroit, Cincy and Cleveland have been drafting relatively high for years. High in draft slot location and I think high in the 4/20 Bob Marley sense.

Grid, just a minor point but I did not say teams wanted to stockpile high first round picks. But they certainly love to stockpile picks from say the 20 through the third round.

The arguement for more picks doesn't wash. The Bears had eight picks, had they kept the 49th.

If you cannot address the needs of your team with eight picks, you are sure as hell in a rebuilding year. And I don't buy that arguement anyhow. You blew your load in getting a QB, and he still has nobody to throw to, for all intensive purposes.

Its not as if keeping the second pick necessairly rules out getting either Iglesias or Gilbert either...

And just because the Bears still have around 20 million to play with in FA, doesn't somehow excuse trading down to get a legitimate 3rd round WR, when you could have drafted a legitimate 2nd round WR. Or passing on a stud safety in Moore. The kid can play strong or free, and nickel. If he stays healthy, he is going to tear up in the NFL. He put up CB pass defense numbers in college. The Bears cannot defend the pass for shit...

nothing changed in that regard
