Curtis Martin has just always been my "you know who's awesome and gets no love" guy. Jim Brown averaged 5.2 yds a carry in his career. One year 6.3...SIX POINT MOTHERFUCKIN THREE!

There wasn't a hole on that Cowboy offense. That was the best offense I've ever seen. Not as explosive as some teams but easily the best.

lots of running backs take beatings. brian westbrook took more beatings than LT has and he was still effective in playoff games.

Emmitt had more opportunities. He didn't take a beating at all. He had a ot of highway miles.

That's why I said he could easily be #1. What he did was amazing.

crazy. he had a lot of hard running miles. just because he never got hurt and missed games doesn't mean he ran free. he was a fierce inside runner.

smith took a TREMENDOUS beating, and had an unbelievable threshold for pain. he was between the tackles, hard-nosed, a bulldozer like was mentioned earlier. and smith could catch as well. not the crazy numbers like faulk and LT maybe, but definitely better than average.

He consistently got to the 3rd level without being touched. It's not hard for a RB to bulldoze a DB.

he was a workhorse who would run for 4, 5, 6 yards at a time. he was not a game-breaking long run back. almost all of his plays were between the tackles, and they almost all ended with him being gang-tackled, not skipping out of bounds. fuck, i hate the cowboys and i hated watching him pound the giants, but to say he didn't have to run tough is absolutely ridiculously wrong.

Yes, he was a workhorse. A Clydesdale. Not a thoroughbred, just a plow horse. (DING!)

He was "Mr. 4 yard gain" (DING!)

Yes, he was not a game breaking (or) long run back. (DING!)

Almost all of his plays were btw the tackles.... (DING!)

Any sane person not from the armpit that is Dallas should hate the cowboys as well imo (DING!)

But,

He often (largely) ran through holes that were 2-3 yards wide.

He often got gang tackled by DBs and the occasional unblocked LB....no one else was left.

He WAS a virtuoso at running over the CB who Irvin had just blocked...five, six yards downfield

He wasn't Franco Harris, but he wasn't bashful about taking advantage of the out of bounds markers quite a bit himself...but that's common (Except say for Brown, Campbell and Payton)

He virtually never had to face eight in the box, playing in one of the greatest offenses ever.

He gets more mileage out of the ONE ( ) dislocated shoulder game vs. the damn Giants than anyone except maybe....MJ's flu game, Jack Youngblood's broken leg & Willis Reed's game seven with a limp  (but then again, those WERE title games)

well, i can only comment on what i saw of the guy, and, going on that, i stand behind my opinion. i think a lot of times great individual players get "penalized" for being on great teams, and this is one of those times. At the end of the day, when all is said and done, he was a cowboy. that alone is enough for me to not shed any tears about his legacy!

Right. This was my initial reaction. I hated the Cowboys in the early-mid 90's, but the fact that Emmitt is continually so overlooked and disrespected still surprises me. He's easily one of the best RB's in history. Longevity, especially at that position, counts for something.

One other thing about LT. He's played on some great teams with great QB and O-line play the past 6-7 years. What has he to show for it? And no, he hasnt taken a beating more than any starting RB usually would. Just look at the difference between how him and Rivers handled being injured in the playoffs. It's not surprising that the very next season it started being considered Rivers' team.

Completely agree, it has always amazed me how people undervalue him. And I hate the Cowgirls.
