Geez....I guess I shouldn't be too surprised that the national guys are suggesting that Rex may have been benched, but then I read Mariotti's column where he wasted a column talking about this, and attempting to create a story where none exists......

Maybe we should not play Griese at all, and then Mariotti can write columns after the Bears lose in the playoffs that the Bears should have had Griese ready to play in case 'Bad Rex' showed up.

Pick a lane!

Why bother reporting a story if you're not going to get it right. These "experts" are so clueless.

Just goes to show, yet again, that the national guys just don't know what they're talking about.

Another example. I don't really care if they bash Rex if he plays poorly, but this is just dumb. HEY, BOO-YAH NETWORK, REX WASN'T BENCHED!!! THEY TOOK MOST OF THE STARTERS OUT OF THE GAME.

Why do you care what Jay Marriotti thinks? :D

That was a good one! You blindsided me there! :P

I'm actually entertained by Mariotti more than anything. He's a good writer, but he can't seem to hold a position on some things.

If Orton plays against Green Bay, then we have a 3 way QB controversy.

I don't mind hurting his pipsqueak feelings.

I don't see where everyone, and seemingly the Bears' coaching staff included, has gotten the impression that Rex's psyche is so fragile. Prior to this year he's had his toughness and durability continually questioned, been booed off the field in both preseason and regular season games, and had his overall skill level as a quarterback questioned, as well as why he was "handed" the job. Which is where I think a lot of the general Rex-angst stems from. For whatever reason, some fans expect Rex to perform flawlessly and to not have ups and downs simply because the job has been his to lose, and dis is a blue collar kinda town dat doesn't like it when people don't earn it, knowwutimean?

So what has Rex done with all of this? He's worked his way back from two season ending injuries. With the exception of after the Minnesota game, he has stood in front of the media and said pretty much all the right things, and come across as confident in his abilities. And he should be, after delivering the second-best season a Bears QB has ever had in his first full season of action. To me, that's not indicative of someone with a fragile psyche.

I think part of the problem with the reaction to Rex is that he has paradoxically made being a QB look both too easy and too hard. That is, some of his good games were so good that they had the effect of making people think that they were more of a mirage than reality, especially when they are compared to the shockingly awful games he has had this season. If Rex's season had followed a more traditional narrative of development--one in which he struggles early but shows steady improvement--I think people would feel better about him. Instead, though, Rex has yo-yoed and thus lead people to believe more the valleys than the peaks. To me, the encouraging thing about his recent performances is that he seems to be adjusting to the way the league is playing him by throwing to the short receivers more frequently. Hopefully this trend will continue in the playoffs.

Depends on your definition of first season playing. Some people(not me) consider him to be equal to a 4 year veteran. I put him somewhere in the middle.
