My projected top 10 draft order:

1. Dolphins - Glenn Dorsey - DT - LSU - Dorsey has a great combination of size, speed, and production at the highest level. He is extremely versatile and is capable of playing inside or out in a 3-4 scheme and can play either DT spot in virtually any 4-3 system. He is very explosive for a man his size and has the ability to become a larger version of Tommie Harris. For a team looking for the best defensive player in the draft, Dorsey is a no-brainer at this point.

2. Raiders - Chris Long - DE - Viriginia - Talk about a guy sky rocketing up draft boards. Chris Long, son of Howie, could see himself playing for an organization that his Father dominated at for many years. Chris is a big, strong DE who has outstanding quickness and ability to get up field in a hurry. He appears to be the total package at DE, with outstanding athleticism for his size.

3. Rams - Jake Long - OT - Michigan - If the Raiders should climb in front of the Rams, they will be lucky if Jake is still on the board when they pick. An anchor LT is a sore spot in Oakland after the Robert Gallery debacle, so Jake could fall to the Rams who desperately need another OT. The offense simply collapses when Orlando Pace is out of the lineup and Long provides long term aid at the position, as well as the ability to start at RT along side Pace until he hangs it up.

4. Jets - DeSean Jackson - WR - Cal - This could be a reach, but I just can't square with the Jets taking McFadden, even after what we've seen from Adrian Peterson in Minnesota. They have Thomas Jones and a long term commitment, plus a young QB who needs weapons to develop with. Jackson provides the Jets with the ability to stretch the field, which is an ability they sorely lack right now. Even though rookie WR's don't contribute statistically, the presence of Jackson could be enough to open up the offense underneath and create running lanes in 2008.

5. Bengals - Darren McFadden - RB - Arkansas - I know this would be interesting, but let's face facts. The Bengals are on offensive team. McFadden is extremely versatile and can play RB, WR, and even throw the football. He can also return kicks and punts and he is simply the best player on the board that isn't a QB. If the Bengals don't at least consider adding a guy who could be the most impactful rookie in 2008, they'd be crazy, right?

6. Patriots via 49ers - Calais Campbell - DE - Miami - The Patriots have everything and the top of this draft is sprinkled with QB's everywhere. Its highly unlikely this team would take one of those to backup superman Tom Brady considering the money they would require. So I figure they will take the best lineman on either side of the ball that is available. That's Campbell. Campbell is a very versatile player and an incredible athlete, which is what New England looks for on its defense. They are pretty deep, but another great body to work inside is never a bad thing. You can never have enough big guys that can run.

7. Falcons - Andre Woodson - QB - Kentucky - While its true that Brohm is still on the board and Petrino has a strong relationship with him, it is also true that Petrino knows Woodson just as well, having scouted him every year for their annual matchup. He's seen every game Woodson's ever played and must realize he's probably the better pro prospect. That being said, having another Coach on the field, Peyton Manning style, wouldn't be a bad thing either. Brohm clearly knows the offense and could probably call plays blind folded for Petrino with little time needed to adjust to the intricacies of a very complex offense.

8. Texans - Kenny Phillips - CB/FS/SS - Miami - Phillips his here because he is a man child. They need the best DB's they can find if they are going to win in the pass dominated AFC. Phillips adds the most versatile player to come along in the secondary in several years. He can play any position in the secondary and is the ultimate utility man. Not only that, but he can probably play every one of those positions at an extremely high level. Can't pass here.

9. Chiefs - Brian Brohm - QB - Louisville - I realize this is a running team, but this year showed that if you have zero threat to throw downfield, then Larry Johnson will run into brick walls play after play after play until he gets hurt. This team has seen enough from Brodie Croyle to realize that he's probably a good NFL backup, at best. Can they afford to pass on a Franchise QB with the Franchise RB, WR, and TE already in place and the pressure to win now mounting?

10. Cardinals - Derrick Harvey - DE/OLB - Florida - The Cardinals have to assume they have the pieces in place for an offense to gel in 2008 if Leinart gets another year under his belt. They have the WR's and the RB with an improved O-line. Its time to focus on the defense and what better way to do that then to add the best pure pass rusher in the draft. Harvey is instant disruption, or at least that's what they hope he'll be.

15. Bears - Gosder Cherilus - OT - Boston College - There are two trains of thought here. What the Bears should do and what they will do. Unfortunately, for a team with a history of botching their 1st round pick, the two are unlikely to coincide. At this spot, the Bears would probably be in position to land James Laurinitis (if he comes out) to replace Lance Briggs or to draft RB Jonathan Stewart out of Oregon to replace Benson. With the Bears likely sold on trying Jamar Williams and being financially tied to Benson, I expect they will try and find the replacement for Fred Miller at RT either this year or when he leaves after 2008. Cherilus could be that guy. At this point, he is tagged with a mid-1st round grade and would be a solid addition to an aging O-line. Other possibilities here: Laurinitis and Stewart, LB Keith Rivers, WR Early Doucet, RB Steve Slaton, WR Adarius Bowman, LB Rey Maualuga, and WR Mario Manningham.

Wouldnt the Pats try to get an LB? The LB corps is playing well but they will need to get younger and more athletic sooner rather than later

Entirely possible given that they don't have any glaring holes, they could just take their highest rated plater at any position.

If I had to guess I think Belichick changes that top 7 pick for a later first round and a late 2nd-3rd round pick. The guy is incredible on draft day

Yes, they would. I just don't see them being afforded the opportunity to get him.

That's the most shocking news of this post. Who knew Howie was married, and to a woman?

The Raiders are loaded with a bunch of average/below average veteran RB's, so that would be another spot for him up top the draft.

What I wonder is how the Bears are going to be a #15 pick. I wouldn't be suprised if they're top 5.

I think this team is capable enough to win 6-7 games, and lower their draft standing - that's not necessarily a bad thing either since the signing bonuses we've seen are getting higher and higher, and the bust factor isn't lowering any.

At this point they only way us Bears fans can get more disappointed is if they went 6-2 in the 2nd half, thus not garnering either a playoff spot or a top 10 draft pick.

I see it happening. :x

and in the process convince themselves Brian Griese is the answer next season and dont try to give him any competition in training camp. Not that they have a history of that sort of thing...

I for one would be fine if they did not pick in the top 10. Based on their past 17 years, they have a 50/50 chance of screwing it up.

Year Player Pos. School Pick #

2005 Cedric Benson RB Texas 4
2001 David Terrell WR Michigan 8

2000 Brian Urlacher LB New Mexico 9
1998 Curtis Enis RB Penn State 5
1993 Curtis Conway WR Southern California 7
1990 Mark Carrier S Southern California 6

While I still think OL is the biggest need I wouldn't mind seeing Early Doucet in a Bears jersey.

But who names their kid Early, provided he or she's not premature?

Save two seasons by Carrier and Conway (apiece) it looks more like they screwed up 5 out 6 to me...

Earl/Early Doucet is Dwayne Jarrett in training pants. Sorry W_Z

Isn't he the Brian Boswell, or maybe Steve Emtman of the near future?

Just asking

1. Dolphins - Quinn Dorsey - DT - You still have to think the Dolphins would be leaning toward taking this guy. He's as big as a DT, as quick as most DE's, and has been highly productive in a highly competitive conference. Dorsey has Tommie Harris potential and the Dolphins defense desperately needs to stop the bleeding with the best player available on this side of the ball. Dorsey is a play maker and if healthy, a solid #1.

2. Raiders - Darren McFadden - RB - Perhaps not the popular pick here, with many feeling Howie Long's kid may go to the Raiders as early as #2 overall, but let's think about this. If I'm the Raiders and I just drafted my franchise QB, wouldn't it make sense to draft a gamebreaking RB to play alongside of him? Could this be the making of the next Colts or Cowboys 1-2-3 combo? The Raiders may need a DE, but playmakers like McFadden are rare.

3. Jets - Jake Long - OT - Yes, I know that this team has already taken a pair of 1st round O-lineman last year, but you should know that both are playing very well. With McFadden off the board and the team not needing a QB, the Jets will take the best offensive player on the board to supplement one of the worst offenses in the league. What's wrong with another bookend OT to protect a young QB and to help open holes for Thomas Jones? It worked for the Browns this year.

4. Patriots from 49ers - Chris Long - DE - The Patriots are looking to add quality depth and the best place to add depth is in the trenches. They will shop for the best lineman on either side of the ball and Chris Long just happens to be there for the taking. Long can play in a 3-4 or a 4-3 at DE, which makes him an ideal fit for a flexible defensive scheme like they have in New England.

5. Chiefs - Andre Woodson - QB - While its true that this team has Brodie Croyle on their team right now, has he really shown anything that would lead anyone to believe he is a true franchise QB? If he's not, then you have to take your shot when you've got it and Woodson is probably the best QB on the board. At the very least, you'll create a nice competition and one of these two youngsters is likely to emerge as a solid QB to partner with LJ and Dwayne Bowe in '08.

6. Rams - Calais Campbell - DE - The Rams need help on defense bad. There aren't any O-lineman worth taking here unless they reach a bit on Sam Baker, so then why not improve your pass rush and your ability to hold up against the run. Campbell is the best D-lineman on the board and possibly the best defensive player at this point. He should help shore up a defense that struggles to keep pace with the Rams high-powered offense (when healthy).

7. Bengals - Kenny Phillips - CB/FS/SS - The pipe dream of Darren McFadden seems to be slipping with each meaningless win. Back to reality. The Bengals need to draft defense here and with plenty of young talent to develop in the secondary, why not add the ultimate utility man? Phillips can play any position in the secondary, but is probably best suited as a FS or CB at the next level. Either way, he is a playmaker, and nobody needs them worse on defense.

8. Ravens - Sam Baker - OT - Don't be surprised if this team takes a shot at a Brian Brohm type QB here. If they have any inclination that Boller cannot be that guy, they may not have a shot at a franchise type QB for awhile. I think they lean on Boller and try and add depth up front with an oft injured Jonathan Ogden, who could retire in 2008. Baker would be an ideal replacement with plenty of upside.

9. Vikings - Brian Brohm - QB - I have little doubt the Vikings would add a franchise QB if they get a shot. Brohm is that guy and the Vikes should be happy he slips this far. Brohm would be an ideal pair with Peterson to help formulate a power house offense of the future (in theory). With Peterson on the field, he'd have practically an entire career of 8 in the box and man coverage to throw against.

10. Falcons - Jonathan Stewart - RB - With Brohm and Woodson off the board, the Falcons could consider Matt Ryan to groom behind Leftwich with a long term plan of getting him in the lineup in 2009, but I still think that's a reach here. If they want Ryan, why not trade down and add some picks. God knows they need them. If they keep the pick, can they pass on a Stewart-type back? He's a big, productive, speedy back who can replace the garbage they are currently lining up at the position.

15. Bears - Malcolm Kelly - WR - Why not? Sure, they can take a guy like Quentin Groves, the DE/OLB freak, but do we really need that more than a WR? Kelly is a huge and very productive WR from Oklahoma, and he's a perfect complement to an offense that wants to put double TE's on the field and try and stretch with Hester deep. Kelly is the ideal replacement for Muhsin Muhammad, this year or next. There are plenty of LB's here, like Laurinitis, Maualuga, and Dan Connor, and offensive needs like OT Ryan Clady, WR Early Doucet, and RB Steve Slaton.

Only disagreement is that Woodson goes to the Chiefs. I just don't see Herm doing that.

I think they are going to be a 7 win club so it may not be right at 15, but somewhere in that neighborhood.

Based on last year's records, we'd have been picking between pick #7 and #11. But since we have played the 4th toughest schedule in the league, expect us to be at the back end of whatever record block we are in. So 6-10 would have us picking between 8-10. 7-9 would have us picking between 9-13.

NFL Draft Update

1. Dolphins - Quinn Dorsey - DT - Still leaning in this direction. The Dolphins still desperately need defensive help and will probably take the best defensive player on the board and a definite play maker inside. Dorsey is that guy. He is pretty large for a short guy, but extremely explosive. He fits just about any defensive system you can think of and can even be a 3-4 DE if you've already got someone in mind for a NT spot.

2. Raiders - Darren McFadden - RB - I still can't see the Raiders passing on a chance to match a game breaking RB with a game breaking QB. JaMarcus Russell and Darren McFadden could keep the Raiders from picking in the top 5 for a long time. McFadden could be the best player in this draft and is the closet thing to Adrian Peterson you will find. If JaMarcus gets his shot this year and is ready to actually contribute next year, McFadden would be ready right out of the gate.

3. Patriots from 49ers - Chris Long - DE - The Patriots want versatile players and at this point, unless they draft a bookend LT in Jake Long, the Patriots will probably take the most versatile lineman on the board. Long can play in a 4-3 or a 3-4 at DE and can get after the quarterback. This assumes they keep the pick, of course, as I wouldn't be surprised to see the Pats turn this into a pair of 1st rounders in this draft class or the next and move out of the way for someone who needs a QB.

4. Bengals - Calais Campbell - DE - The Bengals need defensive players and Campbell is a freakish Defensive End prospect. He is a pass rush phenom and can instantly improve a young secondary once he catches up to the NFL's speed. If the Bengals keep Justin Smith on the other side, talk about a pass rushing nightmare for offenses.

5. Jets - Jake Long - OT - Again, same as last week. I know they added a pair of 1st rounders on the line last year, but another franchise bookend tackle that can play either side, to go with a Franchise caliber 2nd year Center? This could be the beginning of a pass protection and run blocking unit that will dominate the AFC for years to come. Long is the best offensive player that is not a Quarterback on the board.

6. Chiefs - Andre Woodson - QB - The Chiefs haven't seen enough out of Croyle and Huard to not take a shot at a Franchise QB if it presents itself. Woodson is the best QB in this class and I'm not sure the Chiefs can risk not taking him here. With a 50% bust rate at the position, either he or Croyle should step forward over the next few years and finally replace Trent Green.

7. Falcons - Brian Brohm - QB - Leftwich has been utterly terrible so far in Atlanta. He's not what they were hoping for when they brought him in, so don't be surprised if they draft Brohm to work under Petrino for half a year or all of 2008, before turning the reigns over to Brohm. Brohm and Petrino is the perfect match.

8. Rams - James Laurinitis - LB - Laurinitis is looking like the best and most versatile LB on the board. With his speed and increased size (240 lbs now), he can play inside and out. And his ability to dominate in an NFL caliber defense in a very physical Big Ten since part of his freshman year speaks volumes about his ability to grasp schemes. Rams need defensive help and Laurinitis is it.

9. Ravens - Matt Ryan - QB - Personally, I think this guy is destined to be a bust, but the Ravens are so decimated at the QB position that they find themselves picking in the top 10 during a season when most felt they were Super Bowl contenders. Ryan could sit behind Boller for a year and be the odds on favorite to take over the job in 2009.

10. Panthers - Jonathan Stewart - RB - The Panthers lack a true feature back. This dual back system isn't working. One game, one guy busts out and then they start him the following week, only to have him tank again. Stewart is a big back with excellent speed. He can be an every down weapon and bring solid balance to a team that is continuing to age at QB. Someone has to take the pressure off or the offense will continue to sputter.

13. Bears - Sam Baker - OT - The Bears O-line isn't getting any younger. Metcalf will likely replace Rueben Brown inside next year, if Josh Beekman can't beat him out for the job. In the same swing of the axe, the Bears could remove Fred Miller and his hefty contract on the right side, replacing him with a younger and more versatile Sam Baker. Baker is a three year starter at USC and could play RT or LT in the NFL. He is best suited as a LT, so don't be surprised if he makes the switch when John Tait hangs it up. Other possibilities here include LB Dan Connor, RT Ryan Clady, FS/SS Kenny Phillips, and WR DeSean Jackson.

2. Jets - Darren McFadden - RB - Thomas Jones is great and all, but McFadden is the closest thing to Adrian Peterson in this draft. The Jets can't afford to pass on a guy who is clearly the next best, instant weapon in the draft. McFadden gives this team so many options with his ability to run, catch, and throw. The Jets could not pass on him here.

3. Falcons - Jake Long - OT - This could shock many of you, but there are rumors that the QB stock in Brohm, Woodson, and Ryan could be dropping. If that's the case, perhaps the Falcons would continue to think that Leftwich is their answer next year and they can spend a 2nd on a QB to develop behind him. Right now, they can get that anchor LT for the next 10 years who could dominate that left side. Over the years, there is no safer pick than a LT.

4. Chiefs - Chris Long - DE - Virginia - The Chiefs also need a QB, but again, the stock of those on the board appears to be dropping with the 2nd rounders closing the gap. The Chiefs can either take a QB when they already have Croyle or they can jump for joy that Long falls to them here. The Raiders scouting staff says that Long could be better now than his father Howie was 5 years into his career.

5. Raiders - Vernon Gholston - LB/OLB - OSU - Gholston is shooting up draft boards with his utter domination in the last couple games including a performance against Jake Long where he simply ran around him or bowled him over at will. That's a domination that Long hasn't seen all year. Gholston's 7 sacks in the last three weeks, combined with his speed and strength will make his decision to go pro an easy one. Plus, he can easily transition into a 3-4 OLB.

6. Patriots via 49ers - James Laurinitis - LB - OSU - The 49ers love versatility and their LB core is aging with Seau and Teddy Bruschi. Laurinitis is capable of playing inside or outside, has great speed, and can rush the QB. He's also outstanding in coverage and could be the best all around defensive player in the nation. Versatility makes him irresistible to the Pats.

7. Rams - Malcolm Jenkins - CB - OSU - I know that this seems like a bunch of homer picks with three Buckeyes off the board in a row, but the reality is that these three players are among the best in this draft at their respective positions. The Rams need another CB/S that can make an impact on that defense and at this point, Jenkins is the best defensive player on the board. There are rumors that Jenkins may not go pro, but a top 10 ranking may change that.

8. Panthers - Brian Brohm - QB - Louisville - The Panthers are moving into QB range here and Woodson and Brohm will be tough to pass on with their age and ineptness at the position. Brohm will need time to develop, so sitting the bench for the first 8-12 games could be a distinct possibility while he figures things out, but having Steve Smith and Dwayne Jarrett to throw to could really speed the process along.

9. Ravens - Andre Woodson - QB - Kentucky - If Woodson is here, can the Ravens be sold enough on Boller that they would pass? I doubt and think they will take their shot here. But the coaching staff has survived one debacle, but a second would be unlikely, so Woodson better be the real deal. The Ravens could also move toward a youth movement on defense.

10. Bengals - Calais Campbell - DE - Miami - Perfect fit. The Bengals need the best defensive player on the board and a freakish pass rusher. Campbell is also a top prospect from a scumbag school, so why not Cincinnati? The 'Nati has been home to the dirt of the NFL for long enough that Campbell should be able to dig up some memories to translate into a suspension or two.

15. Bears - Sam Baker - OT - USC - Fred Miller has got to go. Whether he's injured or whatever, he's been ineffective for the last year. The Bears need a youth movement on their O-line, so why not Baker. He's more of a LT, but he may need to line up on the right side for a couple three years before Tait is ready to move on to greener pastures. Baker could step in and contribute right away and is very capable of learning on the fly. He's a three time All-PAC 10 and two time All-American. Other options include WR Malcolm Kelly, FS/SS Kenny Phillips, RB Jonathan Stewart, and WR DeSean Jackson.

I believe Tait's natural position is RT so he can move back to the position if the pick worked.

I don't think the Panthers will need Brohm. They've invested too much time in their "QB of the Future" to pick yet another star QB. He's hurt this season, but the Panthers should be set at the QB position for the next 10 years.

NFL Draft Update

1. Dolphins - Glenn Dorsey - DT - LSU - This has been a constant all along. Now there is a bit of waiver, but not enough to sway the pick. Dorsey has had a nagging leg injury that has rendered him pretty ineffective for most of the 2nd half of this season. A lot will be determined based on how healthy he is in the national title game and how he plays against an OSU O-line thought of as the best in the nation by many. If Dorsey is still suffering, Chris Long could emerge as a more likely pick.

2. Falcons - Darren McFadden - RB - Arkansas - Darren is incredibly explosive and may be the most impactful player in this draft. Imagine the impact he could have line up behind Byron Leftwich with their group of talented, handless WR's. McFadden is so versatile and explosive that the Falcons couldn't possibly pass on the idea of an instant running game now that Dunn is getting to the end of his career.

3. Patriots from 49ers - Chris Long - DE - Virginia - Don't think the Pats would pass on McFadden if he's there. They are always looking to add weapons or versatility and McFadden is all of the above. On the other side of the ball, so is Chris Long, and his addition to an already very talented D-line would be almost disturbing. Long is a dominant force and the total package, with the speed to play 4-3 end and the size to play 3-4 end. The Patriots would love him.

4. Jets - Jake Long - OT - Michigan - The Jets are on the verge of building one of the youngest, most talented O-lines in the league. They would have anchor OT's on both sides and a future premier Center inside. Up front is the way to build for Thomas Jones and for whoever steps into the role as the team's QB in 2008. Jake Long can be a monster for the next decade.

5. Chiefs - Sedrick Ellis - DT - USC - The Chiefs need defense. Do they ever. With the QB's slipping a bit in this draft, Ellis becomes a strong possibility here. He is a pass rush specialist from the inside with the ability to play well against the run. Ellis can prevent teams from doubling Jared Allen on every play and completely alter the way the Chiefs play defense by forcing teams to keep more blockers home to protect the QB, meaning less receivers out to catch passes.

6. Bengals - James Laurinitis - LB - OSU - With rumors floating that Lance Briggs may be reducing his asking price in order to sign with Chicago, Cincinnati will need a replacement in the middle. Laurinitis is the ultimate in versatility. He has played inside and outside LB at OSU, is a very talented blitzing LB, has outstanding coverage skill to go with great lateral movement, and is a very heady player. He provides instant impact to any defense.

7. Rams - Calais Campbell - DE - Miami - The Rams need playmakers and Campbell can be that. He is one the best remaining D-lineman on the board and plays with an attitude. Depending on bowl performances and the combine, Vernon Gholston could climb into this position. Many are viewing him as the next Will Smith off the edge, but right now, I'm saying Campbell.

8. Ravens - Vernon Gholston - DE - OSU - Vernon Gholston could be an ideal fit in Baltimore. They are aging in the LB department and have a history of taking speedy DE's and turning them into oversized LB's who are capable of rushing the passer, playing the run, or even covering a TE (which is what Gholston does in OSU's zone blitz package). Gholston is a man-child and has the ability to be a dominating force on this defense that needs a youth movement.

9. Raiders - Malcolm Kelly - WR - Oklahoma - The Raiders have a plethora of RB's with Jordan, Fargas, and Rhodes, and need to figure out how to shuffle them around to have an effective offense. They have their QB of the future and now they need some guys they can throw the ball to. Kelly is a huge WR that is fleet of foot. He probably will be more of a possession receiver at this level with his 6'4", 225 lb. frame, but a goal line threat wouldn't hurt the Raiders here.

10. Texans - Malcolm Jenkins - CB/FS - OSU - This would be an interesting pick for the Texans at #10, but with plenty of QB's and CB's on the board at this point, either trade down or take the best CB available who can contribute. With a pair of young talented CB's, Jenkins, who is an outstanding tackler, would be likely to play FS or SS on this team. He currently plays FS in all Nickel and Dime packages for OSU, which they are in 50% of the time.

15. Bears - Andre Woodson - QB - Kentucky - The odds that either Brohm or Woodson get pushed down to the Bears is growing. The question is whether or not they would take either here. Both are falling for various reasons ranging from lack of leadership or poor performance down the stretch, to issues such as a developing overabundance of talented players in the 2nd round. And there are plenty of other needs on the board like Kenny Phillips, the FS/SS from Miami, or Jonathan Stewart, the big bruising back out of Oregon. There are LB's like Dan Connor to replace Briggs and OT's like Ryan Clady and Sam Baker to replace Fred Miller. They could even add another Devin Hester in WR DeSean Jackson, although we haven't figured out how to properly use the 1st Devin Hester, let alone a 2nd. Right now, we'll say the solution is Andre Woodson and a new era in Chicago begins as early as week 1 in 2008. Let's hope our luck at drafting QB's improves in 2008, as a QB is very possible in the 1st or 2nd round.
