1st question: Mike do you know what HB's are for?

The Bears' search for an offensive coordinator might be ending where it began -- with Mike Martz.

After investigating many other coaches for the position, the Bears finally have decided to interview the former head coach of the Rams. Martz arrived Friday afternoon at Halas Hall.

Bears coach Lovie Smith was Martz' defensive coordinator in St. Louis and the two have remained friends. Martz is known for his aggressive passing offenses -- not for getting off the bus running.

After leaving the Rams, Martz was the offensive coordinator for the Lions, where he worked for Bears defensive line coach/assistant head coach Rod Marinelli. He also worked for one year for the San Francisco 49ers before spending the 2009 season out of football.

On Thursday, the Bears interviewed Vikings quarterbacks coach Kevin Rogers for the position. They also are known to have courted Jeremy Bates, Rob Chudzinski and Hue Jackson. A source close to the situation told the Tribune that the Bears seemed to be operating with more urgency in trying to settle on the right candidate

Not even in the top 10 choices, but unlike the other "candidates," he's at least run an NFL offense into the ground

If they hire him, that's another failed head coach for the staff

More people in slots to take over should Lovie get canned next year.

They will rue not taking care of the situation when they could, this year. Who'd want to hitch themselves to this wagon?

Also, if you have Jay, this is not a get off the bus running team. I'm sorry, but make up your mind.

I might be one of the few people that wouldn't have a problem with this hirem. Martz was good with average to great QB's and bad with terrible ones. This is the offense Lovie wanted to run too.

I have a really bad feeling that Mike Martz will become the head coach of the Bears at some point next season. Angelo better get some OL & WR's if their gonna hire Martz!

Someone tell me if I am missing something, because I have a feeling I am:

2009
Jay Cutler had 555 throwing attempts
Matt Forte had 258 rushing attempts

1999
Kurt Warner had 499 throwing attempts
Marshall Faulk had 253 rushing attemps

I guess some people had a problem with the amount of rushes we had this year, but IMO, that wasn't the problem at all. The problem was we had bad players, who didn't play well.

BINGO!!!!
BLACKJACK!!!!

Here in Hooterville the Coaches or Manager are supposed to wave a magic wand...it never changes...some new scheme is going to cover up the piss poor talent usually assembled by the inept Bears.
THE PROBLEM IN THIS TOWN WITH THESE PRO TEAMS HAS ALWAYS BEEN PLAYER TALENT...not WEATHER...not "laid back" coaches....
Sure, there have been idiots as Coaches and Managers...Bevington comes to mind...but Ditka is such a hero....LOOK AT ALL THAT TALENT HE HAD!!!!
Da Coach was just another goof in New Orleans.

No, you're not missing anything. It's one of those Lovie myths that everyone uses as evidence of incompetence. We rush too much, and he even said "we get off the bus running" OMG, except that they threw the ball more than twice as much as they ran it. "Rex is our quarterback", except that he benched him after Week 3 of the 2007 season. "I hate the Tampa 2 because of how passive it is", except that the Bears blitzed more than any team in the NFL in 2008 and were near the top again in 2009, all while playing very little cover two.

Martz has had success as a coordinator but the problem is it reportedly takes a couple years to master his offense.

I agree with your point about the misconceptions. My problem with Lovie isn't that he "doesn't blitz," but that he doesn't seem to know how to implement blitz schemes. Watching a Lovie-coached defense try to blitz is the equivalent of learning Spanish from a German linguist. Something gets lost in translation.

As for Martz, I would be interested in seeing him as the offensive coordinator and am a bit puzzled by the negative reaction to his candidacy. Would people have preferred Jeremy Bates or Hue Jurection, or whatever the Raiders' guy's name is?

So in 1999, Martz's first year as the Rams O.C. and a season which witnessed them improve from #27 in offense to #1, his guys still hadn't "mastered" the offense?...Well, if those are the kind of results one can expect from a half-assed knowledge of his schemes, I'll take them.

It did not seem to take long for St. Louis to catch on to it, as they won the Superbowl in his first year there.

I think I am changing my mind on Martz. I kinda hope now that they hire him. I don't think there will be a middle ground on it. Either it will be a big success with Cutler and the offense doing really well, or it will be a complete bust and will just help Lovie get fired and bring in Cowher and his crew.

This whole idea that there is some backup plan to hire Bill Cowher is MYTH.
Old Lady McCaskey and her friendship with the Rooneys affects this how?

I agree with that. I don't mean to say that Lovie is faultless, just that his faults aren't the ones usually attributed to him.

This is true. Kitna had the best year of his career (with a weak supporting cast) his first year in the offense. Lions started the following season 6-2 and Kitna once again threw for over 4000 yards. I think we all ccan agree Cutler is a better QB. Also Forte appears to be the type of back that Martz likes

The Lions had success on offense his first year too. The thing those teams had in common were a dome an a veteran QB who had been watching instead of playing for years. Those guys were humble. Cutler is a different QB even if last year brought him down to earth a couple notches. Also that offense was new in 1999. Teams know what to expect now. That makes the knowledge and execution of it more important now.

Yeah, if the Bears have to install a new offense, they probably won't do well in the preseason, which inevitably means their chances for getting to the Superbowl will be ruined.

I'm pretty sure the roster inevitably means their chances for getting to the Superbowl will be ruined.

That's why we need to dig up Zo Spellman and sign TO. Get with the program.

And where's that karate guy Bob Sapp? We can bring him back along with the spastic racquet-smashing loon, Todd Sauerbrun.

I think it will FF. You would be giving Martz the most talented QB he has ever had.
