there's a right way to do this, frank. lovie taught us a lot over the last ~decade. i'm glad to see that the local guys finally listened to our dearly departed leader.

There's no real reason to believe that the Bears, already on the hook for $5 million to Lovie Smith, will go after a veteran coach who will demand big money. They haven't done this in the past. Maybe things are different now, but I think the expectation is that they will sign a coordinator type who is on a "hot" list.

That's been their history. Obviously they will be targeting an offensive coach so if they do go the OC route, let's hope they hire the right guy for once.

Emery has got to have his list well thought out.

I'd like to see them interview him. Hard to say if he'd want to much power though. I like his pedigree (Super Bowl ring), his personaility and his offensive mindset plus he's still young.

That might be their best bet if they want to keep Marinelli and the 3-4 and go for it next year. The question is then if he is willing to work through a rebuild/reload process.

He would not come cheap however.

Sources tell me Bears already begun the process of reaching out to multiple candidates not only assistants. Decision was made a while ago

Guys like Gruden, Cowher are going to want personnel control. Don't think Emery is going to do that.

If money is the issue (and it shouldn't be) then we all need to root for Lovie to get another head coaching gig, so his salary will offset what the Bears owe him. That frees up a little more for the next guy...

Gruden and Cowher= Too much money and power

Plus, they're kinda overrated now. (As retired coaches tend to be)

Cowher needed 16 years to win.

Gruden won with another guys team and the coach of his previous team not changing the playbook

Jon Gruden has all of the same flaws as Lovie, just on the offensive side of the ball.

Good points. That's what interviews and evaluations are for. Let's hope Emery is up to the task.

whoever they get, they need to realize that, at least in the short term, jay cutler is the most important person on this football team. i know he's some sort of an asshole, but hey, he's got all of the physical tools you need to play the position... he's tough, and he can make some plays.... lovie was always going to be focusing on his defense and "get off the bus running" and whatnot, and as long as he was here having his defense be the #1 priority is going to be what it was.

if hub's musings that cutler ran the team for the last 3 years is even half-true, then they need to get someone in there who he can respect... and someone who can work with him and realize that in this league at this juncture in time, you have to win games because you're the team with jay cutler.... and if that doesn't happen, well then, the changes are going to go beyond the head coach.

I am not sold on Cutler being the answer at QB.

What if they get offered a 1 (in the top 15) and a 3?

You'd be lucky to get a #2 (draft pick) for Cutler right now.

You are probably right so do you trade him if you can get a top 15 pick plus a 3 or a 4?? Does Emery have his eye on a particular college QB and a stop gap vet?

He will run sideways to his retirement press conference.

He would be doing the Bears a favor.

Now that I think about it, I'm not sure why he is crying. IMO, the Bears pretty much ruined him by trying to make him a #1 WR.

Fucking A. If that happened maybe the Bears could beat the Pack once a year.

that's never going to happen.

moreso than the debate on whether or not cutler is the guy, i'm worried about the bears getting their very own christian ponder or whatever to replace him. jay has all of the physical tools you need to succeed in this league, and i'm pretty sure the bears brass knows this. without having a potential-franchise-qb, i think the bears keep lovie going forward because he can do the 7-9/9-7 palindrome dance with a mediocre football team. they clearly think THE TIME IS NOW!!!!!!11 to do something more than that.

i think you've got another year or two or maybe three to try and do something with jay, unless there's some sort of "offer that [we] can't refuse, which very well would be your top-15/3 scenario. good luck with that one.

Points taken, but his contract is up after 2013 and they'd have to franchise him at big money is they don't extend him. Do they really think he has the mental make-up to be the guy or do they trade him while they can?

I doubt they'd get a top 15 pick plus a 3rd rounder but if they do get that offer, I think they seriously have to consider it if not jump on it.

Obviously the new head coach will have a big say so in that.

If the Bears were to trade Cutler, I have no doubt that they can bring back a good 1st rounder and 3rd rounder. There are teams in desperate need of a QB. I don't think the Bears are moving Cutler though.

You'd have to throw in McClellin as well. That would seal the deal.

I think he was drafted to be a LB and that very well may happen next year.

Just my opinion, but I'm guessing most coaches will want Cutler on the roster if they are taking the job. The other available jobs don't have a QB at all.
