This is almost comical now.

While you were gone the board decided that Cutler is as good and probably better than Stafford

No we didn't.

Dr Ken IS the board

Im ok with this. I was pretty against it, but as thought more and more I was scared into "we'll never find anyone decent"

That is a losing management philosophy.

I think it is a mistake not to join the harvesting of the bumper crop of QBs in the draft this year

Agreed.

I'm glad this whole thing can be put to rest now.
Congratulations!

The 2015 draft class may even be better too. This deal should ensure the Bears miss out on that one too as they hope that the Eastern Illinois QB can be good after sitting the bench for 5 years first.

How does anybody know that the Bears won't draft a QB this year and/or next?

No, they will, and he'll be in the later rounds and most likely bad.

They can't even consider one before the third round now.

I'll guarantee you they draft one by the 4th round. Probably the 3rd or 4th.

They aren't getting McCown back. They'll draft a young guy to be the backup for their veteran and groom him.

Because a late round QB has never been able to become a good (or great) starter in the NFL before, right?

I make enough real arguments on here to fill time. Don't argue against things I'm not even close to saying.

The odds are pretty slim.

/cue tiny-n list of late-round QBs

Which is something that your or I do not know.

Orton was a 4th round pick.

With McCown having missed 25% of their games due to injuries over the past 3 seasons, they will have to have a veteran, able to step in right away. they may draft a QB, but I agree with Boilermaker rick-they cannot consider it early in the draft. Russell Wilson was drafted late and worked out nicely. Romo was a free agent.

What is the alternative to letting Cutler go? They apparently cannot keep McCown, so who do you want them bring in to be their starting and backup QBs next year?

Late round quarterback picks are almost always bad. The fact that Tom Brady and Tony Romo exist doesn't change that fact.

The Bears may very well draft the next Tom Brady. It's highly unlikely as I said.

This is why I was so excited about the possibility of a first round pick. Most of the good to great QB's in the league were first round picks. That's all but impossible now since they are locked in on Cutler until 2016 at a minimum. Now, we get to play the Nathan Enderle sweepstakes.

Imagine what the Bears would have given him if:

1. He had led the Bears to the playoffs (or a winning record)
2. He had led them to a playoff win or two
3. He had not missed 6 games due to injury
4. He had a backup who shit the bed while he was out, instead of outplaying him
5. He had posted a QBR higher than 90 with weapons galore
6. The upcoming draft was projected to be lacking in decent QBs

Apparently he had the Bears right where he wanted them!

If reports of Cutler getting $50m guaranteed are true, that would be the 2nd most in NFL(Rodgers). #Bears

That should get Emery fired. He was a tough negotiator with Forte and others but allowed his love of Cutler's talent to make him do something foolish.

why is everyone so pissed? chance of cutler winning a superbowl in the next 5 years is a lot better then drafting a qb and developing him into a top 5 player. and who else is out there? youre not going to get anyone better then mcowen... thing is, market sets a players contract price, and cutler as much as we hate him is the best we can do for the next few years. its either him or stay in nfl hell like we were for 10 years. i mean decades

I get the people who are pissed about signing him. But anyone that is pissed over the length of this deal just does not understand how things work. Just because it says 7 yr does not mean they are tied to Cutler for 7 years.

I would have been fine with them letting him walk and went with McCown and drafting a rookie. But this is what Trestman wants and I have been impressed with what he has done with the offense. So this is on him. He is hitching his career to Cutler. It is a risky move, maybe even a crazy move. So we will see what he can do with Cutler over the next 3-4 years.

I'm pissed at the money he gets for the next 3 years. I was hopeful the team would get cap relief next season because of a team friendly deal.

Don't worry, Nas, When the Bears start out 2-0 and Cutler has thrown for 600 yards with 5 TDs and 1 INT after 2 weeks, you'll be updating your sig about Cutler leading the Beloved to the Super Bowl.

You don't know the cap hit yet, though. For example, there could be a signing bonus spread over multiple years.

Are you counting those won only as the Head Coach? If so, I disagree that he will even much less eclipse the single title Ditka has as the team's Head Coach. Counting those won by Ditka/Trestman as a player, assistant coach is silly. Trestman may well win more down the road as an Offensive Coordinator or QB's coach, but I don't see how that matters to Bears fans.
