Great? Yes, of course. I think if you put avg players in Urlacher, Briggs and Tillman's positions, Lovie fails and is fired within 3 seasons. He goes back to being a position coach or a def coord.

It takes 11 in football. Bears had more talent on offense and still sucked.

Huh? This thread looks like a dissertation on particle physics compared to some of the threads around here. At least we are all speaking civil to one another and not asking YES or NO?!?!?!?!

Of course it does. But you asked if they would have been great. I dont think they would have been great without those great players and when any of them went down with injury you saw the inherent flaws in the system.

Edit:   I fucked up the quotes... Hank Dolphin.

Lovie is underappreciated in Chicago. There's not much a difference between what Lovie did on defense and what Trestman is doing on offense. Give a guy good players on their side of the ball and you'll see results.

Slippery slope when you disconnect players from coaching/systems. Does MJ win or become brilliant when he did without Phil? Same with Kobe and Shaq? Lovie like Phil inherited good players and was with others from the beginning, but all excelled in coach-specific systems.

The implication of that is that this thread is one of the 'better' ones .... that said, I obviously didn't have some deep meaning behind it, just polite exasperation at (mostly) good people having a dumb argument, which is of course the draw and backbone of this place ... that said, the aforementioned implication still stands ... that all said, I have a feeling the tacos I just had will be real fun coming out later .....

Lets just hope that Trestman doesnt neglect the defense to the detriment of the team. Lovie did that and that's how the Bears ended up with Mike Tice as an OC.

The last few years they were still great even with the injuries and the decline in play from some of those players. That's because of coaching and his system. A bad coach would have lost the team a long time ago. Instead you had players crying and talking about retirement because their coach got fired.

McCarthy pulls the same shit though. He admitted he focuses on offense and leaves defense to Capers. Other than Belicheck or Harbaugh I don't know which head coaches appear to be masters of both. Head coach's role appears to be don't hire a dumbass on the side you aren't an expert on.

In 5 of his 9 seasons he didnt have a top 10 rated defense.

Players loved him like high school kids like the teacher that lectures for 20 minutes and lets you talk for the rest of the period. They had it made under Lovie.

Yeah he started out as bad as could be. If the defense stays this bad Trestman should be rightfully fired. A head coach is responsible for the entire team. Get someone good on the other side of the ball.

Either. When he was top 10 in one he was top 10 in the other and vice versa.

The Babich years were mediocre IIRC. Lovie had to get hands on to turn things around. I pretty sure that they were top 10 his last few years even though Urlacher and Peppers had lost a step and missed games.

I did the math on this once and I'm too lazy to find out where I posted it. Basically his defenses averaged something like 15-18 points given up over his nine or ten year career. 80% sure about that.

Lovie's team would have at least picked up that ball that was lying on the ground for 10 seconds against GB. Fucking asshole idiot mother fuckers.

Of course it was a player Lovie didn't get a chance to coach up. Mel Tucker should have been fired for that if he wasn't going to be fired for leading one of the worst defenses in the NFL.

Lovie is under appreciated & disliked by many in Chicago because of his douchebaggery & assholery. Bears Management also grew tired of it & decided it was time for a change. They were right.
