The 1 Man "Fire Phil Emery" club might be disbanding after today.

Jerry Angelo was great though!

I'm pretty sure that a GM who is smart about signing free agents has a better chance of winning than a GM who signs guys like Archuleta, Pace, Taylor, and Manomaneullaanlueulla. I like GMs who sign good players.

Tommy Zbikowski is coming home: The Buffalo Grove native and five-year NFL veteran has agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the Chicago Bears, sources told the Tribune.

Last week the Colts cut Zbikowski last week after a one-year run in Indianapolis. The former Notre Dame standout previously had played four years for the Ravens.

With the Bears, he is expected to push Major Wright for playing time at strong safety and contribute on special teams. He also has return ability.

Known for his toughness and leadership ability, the former Notre Dame captain has moonlighted as a boxer and has spoken of one day becoming a fulltime fighter. As for now, he is focused on the NFL.

Asked about Zbikowski last week, Colts coach Chuck Pagano said, “There is gas left in the tank. I know Tommy’s mindset. I know what a competitor he is. All he needs is an opportunity. I know somebody will give him one and he’ll make the best of it.”

Zbikowski was a quarterback and safety at Buffalo Grove High School before becoming a full-time defender at Notre Dame.

Should be fun to see who gets overpaid to underwhelm this year.

Campbell did suck in his only chance, but signing someone of his caliber was the right thing to do, especially coming off a year in which an incompetent backup QB sabotaged a promising season. Criticizing Emery for the Campbell signing can only be done in hindsight.

Not only are the Bears making a bold move by hiring a CFL coach, they're going to run a college 4-2-5 hybrid defense

I was definitely glad to see Angelo go, but I think his record is mixed. While he wasted plenty draft picks, especially near the end of his tenure, he did draft the players that formed, alongside Urlacher, the core of a pretty good defense for a long time: Tillman, Briggs (third round), Tommy Harris, and Vasher. He also made some free agent acquisitions that paid immediate dividends: Thomas Jones, Jon Tate, Ruben Brown, and Fred Miller. Of course his offensive picks were nothing to write home about, but he did strike gold with picking Devin Hester. He also made the right call in hiring Lovie Smith.

That being said, his post-Super Bowl drafting has led directly to the Bears' current shortage of talent problems, and he mitigated the impact of the Cutler acquisition by failing to surround him with any talent outside of Matt Forte, who was probably the last of a group of good Angelo draft picks.

Not an Angelo fan, or a lovie fan. They beat the bad teams n lost to the good teams. Believe logier was like 13-40 against teams 500 or better. Becoming a vegan fan though, good stuff. Do you think lovie gets a hc job next year?

Thanks. I was ecstatic to see him go; it was sort of reassuring to know that Bears people realized you can't blow draft after draft and expect to compete. At the same time, objectivity (insofar as objectivity is possible) compels you to look at Angelo's total body of work, and acknowledge both the good and bad.

I personally think Lovie should get a shot. I think the Bears either cumulatively led the league or were at least top three in forced turnovers throughout Smith's tenure, which is a direct outcome of the opportunistic defensive philosophy he promised to implement. His defensive philosophy was also good for strong showings in points allowed, except for some bad years immediately following the Super Bowl loss. They got right back to defensive excellence around the time Peppers showed up. None of what we're saying here differs from what Emery mentioned at the press conference to announce Lovie's dismissal. He can coach defense, and he can lead men, there's no doubt about it.

I suppose a team in need of someone who commands instant respect in the locker room and solid defensive coaching can do no harming in hiring Lovie. Lovie, however, needs to start respecting offense. You can't just throw anyone at the OC role. He's a smart guy, so consulting other offensive-minded coaches, league observers, etc., to see what's in vogue offensively shouldn't be too hard. A little studying on offensive systems should lead him toward a specific philosophy that would fit his next team's personnel. Then, you start identifying which coaches would be best to run that sort of system for his team. If he gets hired next year and then turns around and announces he hired someone connected to his past as his OC (e.g. Ron Turner 2.0, or Terry Shea redux), then he hasn't learned anything.

I will gladly judge this pick right now: Emery is a fucking idiot. Another developmental player when they are looking for "Impact players"? Jesus H Christ.....they are actually regressing after Angelo. Didn't think it was possible.

Plenty of playmakers on the board. Yet Emery tries to oustmart everyone once again. Another great drafting tradition started by emery.
