Idk. To me id want the Campbell and trust that he can find a Ben Johnson over hiring Johnson and hoping he turns into a Dan Campbell. But since the "charter franchise" does nothing except hire inexperienced GMs and HCs I'm sure if the market consists of Tomlin,. Retreads don’t work out very often. The goal should be to identify a younger guy with talent and let him grow into the role. A McVay type situation is probably the best you can hope for.

We can debate the retread thing - Reid, Belichik, etc - are retreads Shanahan, McVay, etc are not, but yes even a successful retread at some point was a Ben Johnson waiting for an opportunity. That said, I think you're underestimating the culture change Campbell fostered. He is definitely responsible for Detroit's turnaround while Johnson appears to be a very good playcaller. Both can be true. But you need a rock at the HC and Campbell appears to be that. Johnson will need to display those same CEO qualities since a promotion means less time digging into playbooks and more time telling different players and functionaries to get their shit together otherwise there will be consequences.
