Patriots and Saints swap 1st round picks. NE gets the NO 3, and NO gets the NE 5.

Pick 8- Jax (from Baltimore): Derrick Harvey

There's a surprise. I have rules of thumb. Here's one: when your team gives up 38 points to a shitty Michigan team, no one from the defense deserves to be drafted in the top-10. Jacksonville needs, NEEDS, a WR. They are a WR away from being the best team in the NFL. And yet...

Harvey might be great. Sure, why not. But did they need to move up to 8 to get him? Is he that much better than, say, Merling? Both players are supposed to go off in the teens or early twenties. A trade with a team like the Cardinals or Bears would have been more economical. Let's see what they traded to move up so far.

The swap of the first round picks cost the Jags two third round picks and a fourth. Giving up that much isn't a huge deal for a team that's so close. But it is a big deal if the player you picked kinda sucks.

Pick 9- CIN- Keith Rivers

Whenever two players from the same unit go high, you worry that one or both were rated too highly because they were playing alongside the other. Keith Rivers is worth that chance, IMO. Cincinatti was starting parapalegics and elderly monks at LB last year, as starter after starter went down to injury. Maybe it's my Big-10 bias, but I still think Dan Connor is better.

Will Chad Johnson be a Bengal when tomorrow night ends?

Pick 10- NE- Jerod Mayo

It's long been said that NE would never draft an LB in the first round. Well, when the average age of your LBs is approximately 42, you make sacrifices. I was saying all year long that the NE defense was weak, and it was really weak at LB. The best LB, Colvin, is hurt and gone. That leaves them with one functioning piece (the kid from Baltimore) and a bunch of semi-functioning old parts. I predict a lot of 42-35 games next year... and NE isn't going to win all of them this time.

I will commend them for not reaching for Cromartie. I was all set to rip them for that, so, kudos NE.

Pick 11- Buffalo- Leodis McKelvin

You need a good secondary to compete with the Patriots. He's from a smaller school, and he's a smaller player, but he's IMO the best CB in this draft besides Talib, whose smokey issues concern some people. More importantly, Buffalo didn't reach as they have the last few years and still filled a need. The last time the Bills went to the playoffs was the Music City Miracle game. I was in 8th grade. I graduate from college in two weeks.

Pick 12- Den- Ryan Clady

Damn! Damn, damn, damn! This makes a lot of sense; the famed days of "plug-a-running-back-and-gain-1000-years" are gone. Denver seems to be stuck in neutral, but building the O-line is always a good move, especially when you have a young QB.

Besides the trades, this thing is pretty much going to form.

I smell trade down coming out of Jerry Angelo. Don't know why but he might think he can get either Otah or Williams three or 4 picks later. Or watch them shock the world and take a RB 1st round.

Rumor I've just seen is the Eagles and trying to trade up to this pick to grab Otah.

So much for that rumor.

Otah, Williams or Mendenhall?

Pick 13- CAR- Johnathan Stewart

Hey Sal Palantonio! STFU! The pick is coming!

OK. But see, you just drafted a RB in the first round not that long ago, and you see, he's not really that bad. Your O-line is that bad, and you still have Otah, Albert, and Williams on the board. And Mendenhall is better anyway.

I was on another board and they posted it - I just asked and they said yes - from ESPN.

Hell, trade down and get Otah and get another 3rd or 2nd rounder out of it.

If you can, sure. I don't know who'd want to trade up. Maybe Houston for Mendenhall?

Houston is a possibility. Detroit might want to swap picks. Arizona could use a back. There are many possibilities out there.

The Bears being ranked 28th defensively is a fluke and a prime example of why the NFL rankings, which are based off yardage, suck. They are one of the top five defenses in the league, and they played like it at the end of the year.

I'm shocked. Chris Williams is a nice player, but you could have got him 5 picks later. I'm guessing they were trying to engineer a deal to trade down and were unsuccessful.

That's my guess too. Of the guys on the board, they liked him best and couldn't get anything done down below. You know Angelo has no problem with pulling the trigger on a trade down. Other thing: just about every team below them could conceivably draft an O-lineman. Trade down three spots and you might just miss everyone.

I love this description of his weaknesses

Weaknesses:
Questionable intensity and motor...Must get stronger...Needs to be more physical and aggressive...Doesn't get a great push...Technique needs polishing...May lack a killer instinct...Not a finished product and will need development...Not dominant.

Great - next Stan Thomas.

Pick 15- KC (from Det)- Brandon Albert

Wo, ho, ho! Look at big brains on Herm! Dorsey + Albert = pretty good first round, especially considering that Albert could have gone as high as fifth to the Chiefs. So, for Jared Allen they picked up a potentially dominant DT and they started on the way towards fixing their O-Line. Oakland could learn a few things from their AFC West Rivals.

Detroit switched 1sts, moved up in the 3rd round and picked up a 5th in exchange for moving down in the 1st two picks.
