Hub has been very outspoken about the Bears' wide receivers even before the Jay Cutler trade. At the same time, I heard Hub mention something yesterday with Terry & Dan B. about Jay being "disinterested" down the stretch Sunday...

A statement like this could never be "fact". It's IB's opinion of other people's opinions about Hub's opinions.

Right, I guess it's not fact. But it's what I deduce from circumstantial evidence/his journalistic relevance in the NFL writ large, or even in this market. There are a handful of guys that are really important in journalistic circles at breaking things(Pasquarelli, Mortensen, and Clayton at ESPN, Florio at PFT, Peter King at SI, Glazer at Fox). These are national guys that consider one another competitors and that feed information down the chain. The national magazine guys used to be that important, especially pre-ESPN but even as recently as the mid-90s, but they're just not anymore. They're a relic of an era when information was hard to acquire.

Look at it this way. An NYT article from 1996 said that PFW's circulation was 100,000 copies a week. It's now 125,000 readers a week, which is a really sly way of saying that it's a little over 30,000 copies a week. No one cares about what magazine guys are writing.

For a guy that has been doing this for over three decades, he should be a leader of the pack at what he does. But he's basically irrelevant outside of Chicago, and the only reason he's relevant here is that he gets exposure on the radio.

IB,
When we were discussing Linebackers a couple of weeks ago, you said that you need to look at more than just tackles & assists when evaluating LB's. Someone mentioned that D'Qwell Jackson makeS a lot of tackles & is near the top in that stat each year & You said that he isn't a top LB & that you need to look at more than just stats.
Yet when it comes to Devin Hester, you recite his stats & tout him as a top WR in the NFL because of his stats. I'm using your logic when it comes to Hester. Sure he is 20th in the league in catches, but you need to look at more than just stats, right? I know we all try to spin the argument in our favor, but you need to pick a lane. As for Hub, he is just one of many many many football analysts who don't think Hester is a top tier #1 WR.
I'll stick with my thoughts of Jackson is a top 10 LB, & Hester isn't worthy of #1 WR status.

IB, I know that you are a Football analyst, because you told me so. How is your national relevance?

Defensive stats are far less exact than offensive stats. It's easier to evaluate wide receivers than it is to evaluate individual defenders numerically. Apples and oranges. You can feel free to stick with whatever beliefs you have.

Lollercoaster. First, my job is not Big Important Football Guy. I haven't been doing it for 30 years. If you do anything for that long you establish a reputation within your field. The world of NFL journalism isn't that big.

Second, national relevance and ability to analyse are completely uncorrelated. I'm saying that its sad the Hub the Journalist isn't a bigger player, but that has no bearing upon Hub the Analyst. That Hub blows, too.

A lot of the sharpest analysts I read run independent blogs. They have no relevance to anyone else, but they do great work. Hub the Analyst is light years behind what these guys are doing in their spare time, and this is supposed to be his job.

You can take my analysis or leave it. My goal is to get people thinking about football in a different way, and hopefully in the end we get closer to the truth of what works in the game. Hub pedals the same ready-made, frozen dinner crapola you can get everywhere else. I don't mean to make it sound like I'm doing rocket science, but at the very minimum I hope that what I do is different. The next original thought Hub Arkush has will be his first.

I'm really not interested in getting in a pissing contest with you, but when you said that you are a "football analyst"...I afraid to ask...who do you do Football analysis for? CSGMB???
IB...FOOTBALL ANALYST...for who? For what?
As for Hub, I've got news for you...there are no original thoughts left with regards to Football.
What Hub has that most people don't have is the ability to verbalize his thoughts on TV & radio, & he is pretty good at it. I'm sure that you are better at it than Hub though...right?
Your analysis of Hester & Lovie really makes me question your Football acumen...

I'm not going to get into a whole thing with you about this buddy, but I do analysis for myself. I do it so that I can understand the game better. When I feel like writing, I write. When I'm curious about a question, I research it.

Just because you and Hub have no original thoughts doesn't mean there's none to be had. And you have no idea what my ability to "verbalize my thoughts" might be. You don't know who I am, and you don't know how well I communicate verbally.

I offer my opinions and thought-process for all to see. I feel more than comfortable offering up my analysis alongside yours or Hub's and letting others make the decision as to which is more worthwhile.

Thats NOT what Hub said/says. He says Hester is not a Wide Reciever.
Its a ridiculous stance. Scorehead you really need to read/listen to some other analysts. Youll find Hub is terrible compartively.

And what does CSGMB stand for?

Pasquarelli, Mortensen, and Clayton at ESPN, Florio at PFT, Peter King at SI, Glazer at Fox). Hey I-Boy the afore metion pundits are just Hubs on a national level, shame on you for bringing them up

Clayton and Florio aren't pundits at all. They simply report what's going on. That's mostly what Mortenson and Glazer do as well. If there's any breaking info worth having, one of those guys will get it, or it will be reported through internal NFL channels. Hub was a pseudo-national guy with the magazine too, but he's been vanquished. But those guys, even when they put on their pundit hats (which, for some, they never do) are at their most valuable when they're breaking news.

Dare I ask...please post an original thought about Football...something that has never been said before.
Good luck.

clayton isn't bad at analysis considering he's a mainstream guy. King is terrible

king is your typical sensationalist, and he's incredibly smug. he reminds me of jayson stark in that regard, except king is a bit more agitating to listen to with that death croak he speaks with.

clayton is fine with reporting but his analysis is just as informed as an armchair QB like mike greenberg.

That's a little harsh. He knows much more about football than Greenberg, and it shows.

There you go again on your high horse. You really are Dan Bernstein, right? You gotta be because you have the same my-shit-doesn't-stink-&-I am-smarter-than-everyone-else attitude.

Frank...IB is going to tell you that Lovie is a good coach...better than Gruden, Holmgren, Shanahan, & Billick.

IB can preach about wins and shit until the cows come home. Lovie has been absolutely horrendous this season. This is the game that could and should lead to his firing.
