Too much fire and passion for the milquetoast McCaskeys. It's gonna be some pious babbler with a thousand-yard stare for the third time in a row. But the McCaskeys aren't involved in football operations. And this is presuming that they'll even fire Lovie and eat the rest of the contract in the first place. But the McCaskeys aren't cheap.

Guys, Pat Fitzgerald doesn't even coach fucking Northwestern. He's a cheerleader who has never in his life had a job that involved game scheming.

MUD will be here shortly to chastise you for talking bad about Pat Fitzgerald.

I think if you twisted Mud's arm you'd find he mostly agreed with me, but with a more positive attitude (and with the caveat that Northwestern might need a cheerleader head coach).

Well, I don't think I want Rex Ryan, either, but I most certainly don't want another Dick Jaulovie. Why is it that the coach needs to be some sort of gentleman-scholar, but the general manager is allowed to be a spoonerizing meathead? I still think of Phil Emery thinking the expression "to the nth degree" meant "to the ninth degree" and smile. It's like Jerry never left.

What would I want? A young dynamic guy, offensive mind, NFL experience (player or coach)...a "Jim Harbaugh" type.

Emery has spent a good part of his scouting/executive career working under Bill Belichick disciplines Thomas Dimitroff (in Atlanta) and Scott Pioli (in Kansas City), and insider speculation is that Emery's next coaching hire could come from that family tree. New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and Penn State coach Bill O'Brien are among the prominent names who fall into that category and perhaps possess the kind of offensive pedigree required to finally get Chicago's offense to blossom. It is not known how McDaniels' previous fractious history with quarterback Jay Cutler in Denver -- friction that forced Cutler's trade from Denver to Chicago in 2009 -- would affect his potential candidacy. Bears special teams coach Dave Toub has received consideration for other head coaching jobs in the past and could be considered as well.

Sean Payton is exactly the guy whom the Bears should be going after. The Bears should talk to Payton immediately. As a local guy, he would jump at the chance to coach the Bears & he would be a huge upgrade.

You don't know that. His family is in Dallas, and he may not want to be far from them, or uproot them.

No. He's an offensive coach. He's gonna want Brees and that offense over Cutler and the Bears offense. Dallas is the only other team he'd probably consider, but it's highly likely he will go back to NO.

Steve "Mongo" McMichael has led the Chicago Slaughter to the playoffs in each of his six seasons as head coach of that offensive juggernaut. Need I say more?

I said this on my Facebook page last night. Anyone who thinks the Bears will hire a Super Bowl-winning HC such as Jon Gruden, Bill Cowher, Tony Dungy or Brian Billick are kidding themselves. All of those guys will cost the Bears a lot of $$$$ and will likely seek a huge say in personnel. Neither of which the Bears are willing to give.

The last 3 Bears' head coaches since Mike Ditka's firing in 1992 were defensive coordinators before coming Chicago's way. Dave Wannstedt, Dick Jauron & now Lovie Smith were each defensive coordinators elsewhere in the NFL before landing their first head coaching jobs with the Bears. That being said, I fully expect the Bears to hire another assistant who will be coaching in the upcoming NFL Playoffs, but hopefully he'll have more of an offensive mind than the last 3 guys who became the Bears' head coach.

What remains to be seen in my opinion is how much of a say GM Phil Emery REALLY will have in who becomes the next head coach of the Bears. Is he in control or is new Bears' Chairman George McCaskey influental enough to overrule his GM in regards to who gets this job should it open? That's the real question.

How's he going to coach the Bears AND be mayor of Bolingbrook at the same time?

Agreed on the Phil Emery point. I think the pressure will be overwhelming to can Lovie after the season ends. The team has clearly regressed this year and I can't imagine Emery taking the job without the power to hire and fire Lovie Smith without interference.

Most biting of Lovie's regime has been the terrible offense year after year. There is always an excuse. Like Doug Buffone said today, you can see a pattern after 8 years of terrible offensive production. I would prefer a coach who has done this before. Let someone else get the next big thing. The Bears have tried that with the last 3 hires, time to try something else.

Haley for no other reason than the Bears people know him and he is really an offensive minded coach.

The only thing that is going to happen is that Tice will be fired and Bates will be the OC.

Yes he did. I follow KC pretty closely and I am telling you right now we want nothing to do with Haley. Dude is a crazy meathead. He will make Tice look like a scholar. He is pretty good as an OC, but he is not a head coach.

I think all things considered I would be happy with them giving Toub a shot.
