All he has to do is get the offense to middle of the pack. If he does that he is a success. Defense won't be considered his "responsibility."

Said this in other threads before he was reported to be hired. He was the only guy I got even remotely excited about, but he is probably just the big fish in the small pond.

Do you really expect the defense to stay at the current level? I can't imagine it being anywhere near the same without Lovie. Those were his guys, his defense.

I follow the Raiders and have always been intrigued by Trestman. He was OC for the Raiders when they played Tampa in the Super Bowl and Gruden thoroughly outcoached them. Maybe Callahan didn't allow Trestman to tweak the offense, but they looked awfully foolish running Gruden's offense and allowing Gruden to plan for it.

Law degree, reserved and no facial hair? Yeah, most fans will hate him.

Well, I would assume Marinelli will be back. So this coming year the defense should be similar. Of course a lot of these guys are near the end of the line. Could get ugly in 2-3 years. Biggsy said Arians would not have kept Marinelli. Could be one of the reasons Trestman is here. I guess they both interviewed with Marinelli.

So our CFL head coach is beholden to our 0-16 head coach, sweet.

Hopefully Cromwell learned plenty from Payton n the offense flourishes.

The CFL seems to me like Japanese baseball where no one really can guage the competition or how production will transfer.

It's Kromer, but this probably means Marc is calling plays.

Kromer is very well regarded, interviewed for HC jobs (Browns?) this year. Should be good to bring him in for the OL.

Found this from November 20th. I wonder how much of it will come to apply to Trestman.

Curious Hair wrote:
Is it? I find them similar. They both have gentlemanly, decidedly un-"coachy" demeanors. (EDIT: To be more on the nose: they're not Ditka.) They both trade on a pseudo-cerebral approach to the game (more so than the typical "game of brains and brawn" bloviating). They both seem pretty insular in their hiring of subordinates, preferring to be reinforced than challenged. And despite all the talk of being cerebral gentlemen, neither one can articulate a compelling thought. The only real difference is that Lovie Smith is a competent NFL head coach and Dick Jauron was incompetent.

I guess an apt way of summing it all up might be that both guys look very appropriate standing before a backdrop with Cadillac logos on it.

Curious Hair wrote:
I know it seems like an odd word to use for something as results-oriented as football is, but to dismiss any comparison simply because of record disparity is pretty superficial. If you don't think Jauron and Lovie both appeal to the McCaskeys' sense of aspirational gentility in the same fashion, then I don't know, man.

Tebow was paying him and he was selling QB guru services.

If one year ago you had said instead that they were going to hire Tim Tebow's offensive coordinator, would the laughing have been less?

But, no one would have questioned that hire now.

Alls I know is that anytime I hear Trestman mentioned I get this burning desire to go eat Buffalo Wild Wings. There's some sort of a subliminal connection being drilled in my head and I wish I knew why.

and he kinda looks like Bartman.

I think it's perfectly normal to associate wings and beer with sports. Wings, beer, sports. Wings, beer, sports.

It's a good thing it wasn't being sponsored by Real Urban BBQ.

Are you high? In college you're going to have NFL talent on your roster. Some of those guys will go on to be stars. You don't have that in the CFL. It's closer to high school or Arena Football.

I get your point but I still think that would be better. McCoy did some real good work with Orton too and all he did was win with Tebow.

This guy literally has a website soliciting his services as a qb consultant for the NFL draft.

To be fair.....some of them lasted maybe a week or 2 on a NFL practice squad.

I don't have a problem with the QB consulting. He's a well-trained expert. A guy has to eat.

I have a problem with him not having recent NFL experience. He's not a "CFL guy". He a 20-year NFL veteran that's recently been in the CFL. If he'd gotten an NFL job 10 years ago, nobody would have had much of an issue with it. He'd have just been another successful OC that took the step up. The gamble is whether the NFL game has passed him by. I think he's as likely to be successful as any other candidate that was available to them.

I'm not talking about the talent level, although I suspect the Alouettes would mop the floor with say a mid-level college team. The point is the job itself is much the same. The primary task of a college coach is to recruit.
