Why can't they hire competent non-weirdos? Why?

I don't disagree that Emery's a weirdo, but I wouldn't say he's incompetent. I think Emery's major weakness is being a slave to his metrics.

My understanding was that the Bears had a list of players who they felt wouldn't fall to them, but if they did they would be drafted unquestionably. This was followed by a list of players who would be the primary targets within the range of the 20th pick. Once those names were exhausted the pick would be traded, if possible.

But what's blatantly clear is that the way Emery and his scouts evaluate talent is on an entirely different level than most other GMs, successful or not. Long scored a "9" at the guard position, which they claim was the highest they've seen scored that way in over a decade. Being that the "9" level guard was too rare to pass up, they over-coveted him and felt like they were only doing the slightest of reaches with the 20th pick by taking him.

Telling a mob of angry people "He scored a 9 for us, blah blah" is a bullshit way to rationalize taking a pick on a guy that could've been there at 30. The Cowboys would've taken him at 31 (imagine how this board would be if the Bears had drafted Travis Frederick), but the major question that's eating people alive is "Why not take Xavier Rhodes? Alec Ogletree? Tyler Eifert?"

Those are fair questions, and Emery's not going to give anyone a straight answer because those players didn't score as high for their position as Long did for his. It's confusing, frustrating, and overall incredibly draining.

I'm not going to throw Emery under the bus until I see that the product on the field is worse because of his drafting. These guys were hired to restructure the team from the inside out, and if McClellin, Long, and especially Marc Trestman don't exhibit a truly competitive product, then I'll become a Good Dolphin acolyte and burn the whole fucking thing down. Until then I've got to keep at least some glimmer of hope that these guys know something we don't, or else we're all just jerking off.

Should have taken Brown.

Missed again.

At least here they can say they had them both in for evaluations, made a clear choice. Right or wrong, we will see.

I will put this one out there, if emery goes through 2 drafts without a 3 down player on either side of the ball...time for the clock to start ticking.

This guy seems to love picking athletes.....personally, I like to see some football players.
