Off the top of my head you have the following vets that also played last year:

Wooten
Peppers
Paea
Jennings
Conte
Steltz
Wright
McClellin

That's got to be enough to jump from 30th in the league to something like 23rd or 22nd with good coaching. It's not like the offense is forcing them to take the field more than usual with three and outs either. They've actually gone on long drives this year.

A healthy Melton, Tillman and Briggs, and this defense is at best a mid level defense. Not on the verge of setting records for ineffectiveness but still giving up yards because the safeties sit too far back and the linebackers are on the wrong gaps.

But the company line (this week's current version) they knew they were going to be bad. So next year they get more players and Mel's genius will manifest its self? Even in the most optimal situation they become a mid level defense, still giving up yards to the run or deep middle balls.

Yeah but my point is a mid level defense is fine this year. We might have 11 wins.

I don't think we disagree here. If the best a healthy team can do is middle of the pack, then the best this depleted team can do is below average. Even with that low standard, they are not meeting reasonable expectations by sucking as much as they have. No excuses for Tucker IMO for this abomination.

Ok I can see your angle. I just guess I have no passion plus or minus for Tucker.

The next worst (Falcons I think) team has given up 300 less rushing yards. This means the Falcons, at 31st overall in rushing defense, are an impermeable defense when compared to the Bears. That's beyond bad. It's unbelievable.

Win against Philly and you're in...give up 48 points instead.

Win against GB and you're in...give up a 48 yard TD on fourth and eight instead.

Let's do this...

Defending Tucker is a challenge. Injuries were a factor and it wasn't his defense. But if he didn't feel he could run it well, he shouldn't have taken the job. To have guys wide open at the end of the game when you know they had to throw....

Yes, the defensive breakdowns are not a system thing...they are fundamental things that belong in all defenses, like tackling, gap-discipline, etc.

Well they had zero pass rush all day, I don't blame him for blitzing on that 4th down. How about Conte covering someone instead of having him run right by him?

Well according to the broadcast, Conte valiantly defended the yards, and made the Pack settle for a TD instead. At least he stopped them from converting the fourth down on a 10 yard pass.

Refs handpicked by State Farm.

It's unusual, but I would see the rationale in doing so. They are last in the league in run defense, the next worst D has given up 300 less yards. That's just terrible. They also give up 30 points a game, which is a little more than four TDs given up.

BUT the Browns will launch a HC after one season?

They Discount Doublechecked the FUCK out of us today.

I didn't notice them much. I did notice the Bears gave up a 48 yard TD on a fourth and eight, which means you didn't deserve to win anyway, refs notwithstanding.

It's impossible to defend Mel Tucker. The mistakes we saw this year were more about being unprepared. When you consider he's been a failure his entire time as a coordinator it becomes even harder to give him the benefit of the doubt.

We need a mad genius at Defensive Coordinator who is good at making chicken salad out of chicken shit.

. . . and I hope Julius Peppers decides that he wants to spend more time with his family next year - he is done as fuck.

He doesn't have a family.

Allowing three 3rd down conversions against the Redskins, a backup to a backup to rush for 100+ yards in St. Louis, a 4th & 11 conversion against Minnesota, and three 4th down conversions tonight. All given up by the Bears defense.

If they eliminate just ONE of those, Bears are division champs.

Lots of room to improve in coaching, QB play, and special teams, but the Bears are missing the playoffs this year because of their defense.

Its probably unfair to levy all of the blame at him, but he certainly is a big part of it.

Say what you will about Lovie, his defense never gave up a fumble TD.

You never questioned their effort either. Obviously you can't blame it all on him but the overwhelming majority of it does fall on his lap.

Last in run D (and it wasn't even close), plus giving up an average of four TDs/game is definitely something you can pin on Tucker. Even with the injuries, a well-coached team is prepared, disciplined, and intelligent - the Bears weren't any of those, and it showed up in their piss poor defensive rankings.

The Bears allowed each team to score at least 21 points this season, with the exception of the Seneca Wallace-led Packers who got 20 after Rodgers went down.

The teams that went for at least 21 included high-caliber offensive juggernauts like the Vikings (31), Rams (42), and Browns (31). Even if you take away things like pick-sixes and fumble returns, it still doesn't look pretty.
