What? This makes no sense. Chip Kelly would be the most exciting head coach hire in the history of the Bears franchise.

Maybe they need to bring Gary Crowton in from Canada.

Lovie Smith was one of the highest paid head coaches in all of sports at $5.5 Million per year. Why wouldn't they pay Kelly or someone else $6 or $7 Million per year? Whats another $2 Million for the leader of your team, when you are paying players $10 - $12 Million per year?

I think the rationale that some people had is that the Bears might be unwilling to pay top dollar for a new coach when they have Lovie on the books for this next season. Now if Lovie gets another gig then maybe they don't have to eat as much money. The Bears have never hired a coach with any head coaching experience and I don't think that's going to change anytime soon.

Do any of the Bears insiders have a full list of everyone who is being interviewed?

Yea, I'm a little surprised at how many candidates Emery is interviewing. Typically you might talk with your top 3 candidates, & then go from there...unless he is doing a few courtesy interviews. Given the guys who have been mentioned as candidates, I really really hope that McCoy gets the job.
Also, how much longer will the Bears let Jay Cutler call the shots? Enough already. At some point, they need to stop doing what Jay wants & start doing what is good for the Bears in the long run. I'm pretty sure that Cutler wont be the Bears QB when the Bears go to the Super Bowl.

It's not the McCaskey way. Just look who they've hired in past - all assistants who were not flavor of the month hot commodities. And don't forget the McGinnis incident for perspective. That's why I expect a Carmicheel or Trestman or some other little-wanted reject along those lines.

You are forgetting that Dave Wannstedt was the hottest head coaching prospect in the NFL when the Bears hired him in 1993. Lovie was a pretty hot prospect as well. Now that I think of it, the Bears haven't done very well hiring the hot coaching prospect!

I dunno, isn't the big thing for college coaches now having a HC get his assistants top $? Isn't that why Bielama left? Maybe the Bears will pay for the HC but would cheap out on assistants and that's an issue. I'm not saying that's the case, but it may be a thing.

Didn't McCoy cancel because the guy from Syracuse is getting the Bills job?

Don't the Bears currently have some highly paid assistants? Both Tice and Marinelli are former head coaches. I can't imagine they came cheaply.

The competition for Marc Trestman's services is heating up! Cleveland is scheduled to interview him today following his meeting with Phil Emery.

You don't know if he is a penus. You hear Terry Boers say that. Terry doesn't know either. Besides, no one will ever be a bigger penus than Lovie Smith.
I would prefer Saban over every candidate that Emery is interviewing with the exception of Mike McCoy.

Saban had his shot at the NFL and failed. He seems like the perfect guy to remain a college coach.

The Bears interview roster is now up to 13, according to the Tribune's Dan Pompei:

Dan Pompei wrote:
Chicago Bears general manager Phil Emery is looking in many places to find the next head coach of the Bears, including in his own back yard.

Among the candidates who have interviewed for the position is Bears special teams coach Dave Toub, a source said.

Toub has been a head-coaching candidate in the past. He interviewed with the Dolphins for their vacancy last year.

He is the fourth special teams coach who is a known candidate. The others are Keith Armstrong of the Falcons, Joe DeCamillis of the Cowboys and Mike Priefer of the Vikings.

Coaches with an offensive background who have interviewed or are scheduled to interview include Bruce Arians of the Colts, Darrell Bevell of the Seahawks, Pete Carmichael of the Saints, Tom Clements of the Packers, Rick Dennison of the Texans, Mike McCoy of the Broncos, Mike Sullivan of the Bucs and Marc Trestman of the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League.

Additionally, former Bears great and Vikings assistant head coach Mike Singletary is scheduled to interview.

Still no word on whether Emery has met with or plans to meet with college coaches such as Saban and Muschamp, both of whom have been mentioned as potential candidates for the Bears' vacancy.

Saban has said publicly he isn't interested in the NFL. We'll find out if he is now.

Forget who, but one of the Bears beat writers said Muschamp has not been interviewed so far. Didn't say if he would.

FOR THE RECORD: Scorehead wanted the Bears to hire Singletary when he was with the 49ers.

Scorehead is an excellent judge of character and ability.

Guys, I think it's safe to say Pete Carroll bolted USC at just the right time. He's 3 wins away from a Super Bowl title for Seattle, believe it or not.

I have been only able to listen a bit but is it confirmed they talked to Singletary about the HC position? Is it possible they are lining him up to be DC for another HC? Not that it is any better. Just wondering.

As assistant head coach for the Vikings, Singletary can interview only for head coaching positions with other teams--unless the Vikings give explicit consent to do otherwise.
