He was there for part of it yes.

I'm talking about the defense, not turning this into a Jay vs Josh thing as much as BRick would love it.

NBever said I was impressed by 8-8.

The Bears scored the following amount of points in their losses;
32, 18, 41, 19, 21, 20 (2nd down FG), 11, and 28
For all the love McCown got, the 19, 21, and 20 point performances were with him as the starter.

If you score 28 points, your defense should be able to nail down the win. Hell even if the Bears only won the game where they scored 41 freakin points, they would have won the NFC North.
Your kind of making my point there. The "dominant" offense wasn't able to carry the team. Where is all the optimism that they can solve the huge amounts of problems they had in other areas?

For all the love McCown got, he was the better qb of the 2 last year.

Did I say the offense was dominant, BRick? No. I pointed out how the defense let the Bears down last year. That is the reason they missed the playoffs. Do you not understand that? Improving the defense to even just average or slightly below average makes the Bear a lot better than they were last year. And you are "amazed" that they are in a win now mode. I guess I just shouldn't be 'amazed' by your rhetoric regarding the Bears anymore.

Right, but what you're missing is the fact that Trestman is a QB guru. He can turn any QB into a competent QB! So when you include that, it makes more sense to spend $54 million on the worse guy.

You mentioned that the Bears were the third best offense last year, and that an improvement simply to the 20th best defense would make them a "real force".

Yes, the defense let them down next year. It's a flawed team that likely needs a rebuild. If they score 1 or 2 less points per game last year, we aren't holding out hope that being in "win now" mode will make them a "real force".

Your point seems to be if the Bears get better they may be better. Point taken.

I said "could be" a real force. That is assuming the offense can stay in the top 5. If the defense gets better, and the offense can stay top 5, the Bears might be very good next season.

But please continue to tell me what my points actually are. You're just so damn good at it.

I think it's much more than a one year job, and as I said before, I think the offensive power is somewhat overstated.

The Bears haven't drafted well enough to never have to rebuild. It will catch up to them at some point. I just find it troubling that we fired a GM, and then a coach, because we seemingly weren't going in the right direction, but we still continue to extend the idea that we can still be a legitimate threat to win a Super Bowl.

How is it that nobody in the media saw the Allen signing coming? Out of the blue, the Bears restructure Cutler's 2 month old contract to create additional cap space. I didn't read or hear anyone question why they suddenly needed to move even further under the cap. Given the Bears need for a pass rusher along with the fact that there really weren't any other available free agents who would command a high salary, you'd think there would have at least been some speculation.

I don't know about any formal articles, but a lot of people questioned why they redid his deal then. Clemons came up a few times, and I did see one blogger mention Allen as a possibility.

But literally no real rumors or speculation. Came out of nowhere.

I know Bucky loves to use PFF as his opinion and PFF has become the go-to up/down decider of a player's skill:

Yea, definitely a down year for Allen. But his 11.5 sacks would be the highest on the Bears for the last few years. I don't expect him to be what he was, but with 3 good DEs to use... this excites me. Especially since the other 2 are tough against the run.

They should be a lot better against the run than last year. But a declining Jared Allen who got a negative grade from PFF is the only guy on the team that can rush the passer, and if we are trusting PFF we don't even know if he can do that effectively.

The turf at Soliders Field should help Allen a ton.

What will happen is Allen will be in a rotation. So he will have less opportunities for sacks. But he will get really great and important ones in important times. Then the morons here will say "see he only had 9.5".

The Shea McClellin Plan has been shifted to Jared Allen! Genius!

The Bears now have significant veteran sack support on the field at key spots during important games.

It still could work out though. Peppers was an absolute beast the first couple of years the Bears had him. If Allen has nothing left in the tank, then the Bears cut him after this season and move on.

Still need improvement in the draft. An improved front 4/front 7 makes the secondary much better though.

Guaranteed money first two years sp they cant cut him after one

What I like the most about Emery is that he doesn't fuck around. Something needs fixing, he fixes it...quickly. We watched Angelo & Lovie allow bad play & positional deficiencies on both sides of the ball linger for many years without doing anything to fix them. When they were both on the ropes & in danger of losing their jobs, then they gave huge money to Peppers.
Emery has a plan, knows what he wants to do & executes the plan. This is going to be a real fun season for Bears fans. The beloved have a much better football team now than they did last year. 11-5. NFC North champs.

Can we just skip the baseball season?

Can't keep fixing it through free agency. Have to get more impact players from the draft.

Shouldn't it be concerning that he restructured Jay's new deal mere months after signing it? That indicates that he changed his off season plan during the off season. Maybe it works out great but I don't think being an impulse shopper is a great trait to have in a GM.

Emery has hit 2 home runs in the draft, & he has struck out twice. All GM's miss on picks. Overall I really like what Emery has done with the Bears in just a couple of years.

BEARS!!!

Way too early to call Long a home run. Seems like a good pick at an unimportant position.

But Emery has had more than 4 draft picks, SH.

Your right, & the jury is still out on many of them. Overall I love what Phil has done. He's a big upgrade over dopey Angelo.
